TECHTRON ® PPS
DURATRON ® 1000 PEI
Properties of Techtron ® PPS (polyphenylene sulphide)
Material density:
1.43 g/cm 3
Service temperature:
+220/260 °C (20.000 hours/temporary)
Temporary = only a few hours, where no or only low loads may
occur
A material that was developed for applications where technical
plastics such as PA, POM, etc. no longer suffice and where a
cost-effective alternative to PI, PEEK or PAI is sought for high-tech
applications that are not highly demanding.
Main properties of Techtron ® PPS:
• Very high upper service temperature limit in air, continuous
220 °C, temporary peaks up to 260 °C
• High mechanical strength, rigidity and creep strength over a wide
temperature range
• Excellent chemical and hydrolysis resistance
• Excellent frictional and wear behaviour
• Excellent resistance to high-energy radiation (gamma and X rays)
• Inherent non-flammability
• Good electrical and dielectric behaviour
• Physiologically safe (suitable for contact with foodstuffs)
• Good UV resistance
Properties of Duratron ® 1000 PEI (polyetherimide)
Material density:
1.27 g/cm 3
Service temperature:
+170/200 °C (20.000 hours/temporary)
Temporary = only a few hours, where no or only low loads may
occur
Non-reinforced amorphous thermoplastic with superior
mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.
Main properties of Duratron ® 1000 PEI:
• High upper continuous service temperature limit in air 170 °C
• High mechanical strength and rigidity over a wide temperature
range
• Excellent hydrolysis resistance (suitable for repeated steam
sterilisation)
• Very high dimensional stability
• Good resistance to high-energy radiation (gamma and X rays)
• Good electrical and dielectric behaviour
• Physiologically safe (suitable for contact with foodstuffs)
• Translucent, non-optical grade
• Non-flammability, particularly low smoke emissions
Comment:
Like many other reinforced plastics, Techtron ® PPS too provides
moderate toughness and impact strength. That is why all corners
have to be rounded off (radius >1 mm).
Above 100 °C, the mechanical properties of Techtron ® PPS diminish
significantly and the linear coefficient of thermal expansion rises
considerably. As a result, PEEK types and Duratron ® PAI could be
better suited to precision parts at high temperatures over
100 °C.
Grades: Techtron ® PPS colour dark blue
Thanks to the embedded solid lubricant that is homogeneously
distributed, Techtron ® PPS offers excellent wear resistance and a
low coefficient of sliding friction.
Application: Techtron ® PPS
These material properties of wear resistance and a low coefficient
of sliding friction, combined with excellent chemical resistance,
open up potential applications in all possible sectors of industry
for the material, e.g. industrial drying and food preparation ovens,
systems used in chemical process engineering, and electrical
insulation systems.
Comment:
All amorphous thermoplastics are prone to stress cracking. Liquid
coolants with an oil-soluble base must not be used during cutting.
Preference should be given to water or compressed air for these
materials.
Grade: Duratron ® 1000 PEI colour natural (amber, transparent)
Semi-finished products are made from ULTEM ® . This raw material
offers a combination of excellent mechanical and electrical
properties, together with outstanding natural non-flammability
and low smoke emissions in the event of a fire.
Application: Duratron ® 1000 PEI
Fields involving electrical/electronic insulators – a variety of loadcarrying
components that require rigidity at high temperatures.
Good hydrolysis resistance and compliance with the requirements
of USP Class VI mean the material can be used in medical devices
and analytical instruments.
