Native Vegetation Conservation Act 1997 This Act are provides for <strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> native vegetation on a regional basis in <strong>the</strong> social, economic <strong>and</strong> environmental interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State, <strong>and</strong> to protect native vegetation <strong>of</strong> high conservation value having regard to its contribution to such matters as water quality, biodiversity, or <strong>the</strong> prevention <strong>of</strong> salinity or l<strong>and</strong> degradation, <strong>and</strong> to improve <strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> existing native vegetation, particularly where it has high conservation value. Non-indigenous Animals Act 1987 This Act provides for <strong>the</strong> listing <strong>of</strong> non-indigenous <strong>animals</strong> into categories based on <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> control required <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> risk that <strong>the</strong>y pose to agriculture <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment Fisheries Management Act 1994 Part <strong>of</strong> this Act provides for <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> fish stocks <strong>and</strong> key fish habitats <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> threatened species, populations <strong>and</strong> ecological communities <strong>of</strong> fish <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r aquatic biodiversity. This Act also allows for <strong>the</strong> declaration <strong>of</strong> noxious fish species. Currently carp, gambusia, <strong>and</strong> tilapia are declared noxious species. Game <strong>and</strong> Feral Animal Control Act 2004 This Act provides for <strong>the</strong> effective <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> introduced species <strong>of</strong> game <strong>animals</strong>, <strong>and</strong> promotes responsible <strong>and</strong> orderly hunting <strong>of</strong> those game <strong>animals</strong> on public <strong>and</strong> private l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> certain pest <strong>animals</strong> on public l<strong>and</strong>. Declared game <strong>animals</strong> include deer, pig, dog (o<strong>the</strong>r than dingo), cat, goat, rabbit, hare, <strong>and</strong> fox. Queensl<strong>and</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Protection (Pest <strong>and</strong> Stock Route Management) Act 2001 This Act specifies principals for pest animal <strong>management</strong>, including integration, public awareness, best practice <strong>and</strong> prevention. It is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most complete pest control Acts in Australia <strong>and</strong> focuses on protecting both agricultural production <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment, as opposed to <strong>the</strong> agricultural focus <strong>of</strong> many Acts. The Queensl<strong>and</strong> Pest Animal Strategy is enshrined in <strong>the</strong> Act <strong>and</strong> provides an agreed framework to improve pest animal <strong>management</strong>. Designation <strong>of</strong> responsibility is one significant aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act. L<strong>and</strong> managers have <strong>the</strong> responsibility for managing pest <strong>animals</strong> on <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> local governments have had to develop a Local Government Area Pest Management Plan in consultation with State government agencies <strong>and</strong> stakeholders. Under <strong>the</strong> L<strong>and</strong> Protection (pest <strong>and</strong> Stock Route Management) Regulation 2003, <strong>feral</strong> goats, <strong>feral</strong> pigs, European red fox, rabbits, wild dogs, dingos, <strong>and</strong> <strong>feral</strong> cats. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, any species not listed under Schedule 1 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Regulation is declared a pest. Fisheries Act 1994 This Act covers noxious <strong>and</strong> non-indigenous fish species. The Act has provisions for declaring a fish species to be noxious, making it illegal to possess or release. Currently carp, gambusia, tilapia, <strong>and</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>rloach are declared noxious species. Animal Care <strong>and</strong> Protection Act 2001 This Act requires that all <strong>animals</strong> are treated <strong>and</strong> controlled in a humane <strong>and</strong> ethical manner, regardless <strong>of</strong> status. 68
Health (Drugs <strong>and</strong> Poisons) Regulation 1996 This Act provides for <strong>the</strong> regulation <strong>of</strong> chemicals used in <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> <strong>feral</strong> species. Chemicals must be registered for use for each species to be targeted <strong>and</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemicals is to be restricted unless declared o<strong>the</strong>rwise. Nature Conservation Act 1992 The object <strong>of</strong> this Act is <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> nature through <strong>the</strong> declaration <strong>and</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> protected areas, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> native wildlife <strong>and</strong> its habitat. South Australia Animal <strong>and</strong> Plant Control Commission (Agricultural Protection <strong>and</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r Purposes) Act 1986 This Act provides for <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> pest <strong>animals</strong> for <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> agriculture <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment, for public safety <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r purposes. Administration <strong>and</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act is <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Animal <strong>and</strong> Plant Control Commission, with local control <strong>and</strong> policy development occurring through Animal <strong>and</strong> Plant Control Boards which are based on Council boundaries. The Boards are responsible for enforcing <strong>the</strong> Act within <strong>the</strong>ir locality by monitoring <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> proclaimed <strong>animals</strong>. L<strong>and</strong>holders have <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> controlling proclaimed species on <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong>. The Act also allows <strong>the</strong> declaration <strong>of</strong> pest <strong>animals</strong> which currently includes deer, goats <strong>and</strong> rabbits. Prevention <strong>of</strong> Cruelty to Animals Act 1985 This Act requires that all <strong>animals</strong> are treated <strong>and</strong> controlled in a humane <strong>and</strong> ethical manner, regardless <strong>of</strong> status. Controlled Substances Act 1984 This Act provides for <strong>the</strong> regulation <strong>of</strong> chemicals used in <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> <strong>feral</strong> species. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act is <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> habitat, ecosystems <strong>and</strong> ecosystem processes, <strong>and</strong> biological diversity at <strong>the</strong> community, species <strong>and</strong> genetic levels. This can be achieved by applying <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> ecologically sustainable development including <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> threatening processes. Dog Fence Act 1946 This Act provides for <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>and</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> a dog fence in <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> preventing <strong>the</strong> entry <strong>of</strong> wild dogs into <strong>the</strong> pastoral <strong>and</strong> agricultural areas. Cat <strong>and</strong> Dog <strong>management</strong> Act 1995 This object <strong>of</strong> this Act is to encourage responsible ownership, reduce public <strong>and</strong> environmental nuisance <strong>and</strong> to promote <strong>the</strong> effective <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> dogs <strong>and</strong> cats.
