053 FieldNACO participants may use the 053 field to record LC literature class numbers, other thanchildren’s literature, associated with a personal name heading for an author. Note that 053fields are not assigned to undifferentiated personal name headings. LC classificationnumbers found on bibliographic records created and input by LC (040 = $a DLC $c DLC) canbe added to authority records without further consultation. All other numbers requireverification. Verification can be requested by using the Web form for 053 submissions,available via the Web at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/053/053prop.html. This program willproduce an automated response to the proposal accepted into the LC online shelflist. If thereis a change in the proposed class number, a separate email is sent. It is the responsibility ofthe proposing institution to input the class number in the 053 field.22
