053 FieldNACO participants may use the 053 field to record LC literature class numbers, other thanchildren’s literature, associated with a personal name heading for an author. Note that 053fields are not assigned to undifferentiated personal name headings. LC classificationnumbers found on bibliographic records created and input by LC (040 = $a DLC $c DLC) canbe added to authority records without further consultation. All other numbers requireverification. Verification can be requested by using the Web form for 053 submissions,available via the Web at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/053/053prop.html. This program willproduce an automated response to the proposal accepted into the LC online shelflist. If thereis a change in the proposed class number, a separate email is sent. It is the responsibility ofthe proposing institution to input the class number in the 053 field.22
Variable Fields1XX FieldFormulate the 1XX heading according to the latest revisions of AACR and the LCRIs. Supplytags, indicators, delimiters, subfield codes, and punctuation as appropriate.All non-roman scripts must be romanized according to the ALA-LC Romanization Tables.For all languages, provide diacritics as they appear in the language, except for cases inwhich LCRI 1.0G applies.The nonfiling character indicator has been made obsolete in heading fields. However, it maystill appear in some authority records that pre-date the change in coding.Remember the role romanization plays in formulating unique headings and cross-referencesthat do not conflict.
