GEARING FOR NEWLODGE FOR LEEDS!SINCE the Masonic Buildings in GreatGeorge Street, Leeds were vacated therehas been no representation for CraftMasonry in the city centre. The R W Provincial Grand Master hasgiven his consent to a Petition beingsubmitted to the M W The Grand Masterfor the Consecration of a new Lodge, which would meet in the city centre, at theLS1 Club (formerly the Leeds Club), onAlbion Place, Leeds. The purpose of the proposed Lodgewould be to attract candidates, particularly younger men, who work inindustry and commerce in the city centre, and other potential members who live inthe centre of Leeds. The benefits to themjoining this new Lodge will include:The convenience of being able to getthere straight from work;Good transport links making traveleasier if not using a car;Close to home with travelling kept to aminimum. Also there are a number of Freemasonswho work in the centre of Leeds, whoseFreemasonry is practised in either otherparts of the Province or in other Provincesand London. Some of these Brethrentravel to Leeds on a Monday morning andreturn to their home on a Friday eveningstaying in hotels/flats in the centre ofLeeds in between. A result of this is thatthey have little if no opportunity to practisetheir Masonry.W Bro Keith MadeleyAdditionally, there are men working inLeeds, both Masons and Non-Masons forwhom travelling to the outskirts of Leeds, because of transport arrangements, tovisit a Masonic Lodge is consideredinconvenient, as their home is in theopposite direction, or they live in the citycentre. The potential Founders feel that nothaving a Lodge in the city centre resultsin potential candidates, who work and livein the centre of Leeds, being missed.Additionally, there could well be Brethrenwho have resigned from their Lodges, forthe same reasons, who could be attractedback.Over 30 Brethren from this and otherProvinces have said they wish to beconsidered as Founders, together withothers who desire to be joining membersIt is not the intention for the Lodge to be“elitist” or a “dining Lodge” but it isenvisaged that it will be a working Lodge, meeting four times a year in March, June,September and December. It is expectedthat the work will involve all theceremonies associated with CraftMasonry.A number of potential candidates havealready expressed an interest. The Lodgewould meet on the second Thursdaystarting at 6.00pm. This is considered tobe a convenient start time for thosecoming from work in Leeds, and as suchwill ensure an early finish to enable all toget home at a reasonable hour. The Founders are most grateful that theoldest Lodge in Leeds, the Lodge ofFidelity No 289, has kindly agreed to actas sponsoring LodgeThe proposed Founding Master isW Bro Keith Madeley, of Lodge of PeaceNo 3988 and the Metropolitan GL JubileeMasters No 2712 and the proposedFounding Secretary is W Bro Ian R Lewis,of Legiolium Lodge No 1542 and theLeeds and District Lodge of InstalledMasters No 7918.• W Bro Madeley, a former chairman ofthe Provincial Media Committee, wasdelighted to be awarded the MBE in H MThe Queen’s New Year Honours inrecognition of his charitable work withHRH Prince Charles’s Prince’s Trust andHRH The Duke of York’s CommunityInitiative.
