MUCH SADNESS AT THE DEATH OFTWO FORMER PROVINCIAL RULERSBRETHREN across the <strong>Province</strong> have been saddened to learn <strong>of</strong> the deaths <strong>of</strong> tw<strong>of</strong>ormer Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, W Bro Raymond Arthur Elders, PSGD and WBro John Francis Bird, PSGD.W Bro Elders was Initiated into Phoenix Lodge No 904, Rotherham in 1960 and servedas Master in 1973 and again in 1985. He was co-opted onto the Provincial CharityCommittee in 1986, serving for two years.After accepting two Past Ranks within Provincial Grand Lodge he was appointedActing Senior Grand Warden in 1989. Two years later he received Grand Rank as PastAssistant Grand Director <strong>of</strong> Ceremonies and this was followed by his appointment asAssistant Provincial Grand Master for Area 1, responsible for Bradford and DistrictLodges.He was promoted to Past Senior Grand Deacon within Grand Lodge and reappointedAPGM in February 1994, serving the <strong>Province</strong> until his retirement in February 2000.In Royal Arch Masonry, W Bro Elders was Exalted into Wharncliffe Chapter No 1462in 1970, becoming First Principal in 1970.Subsequently, he enjoyed Provincial and Grand Rank and he was also active in otherOrders <strong>of</strong> Freemasonry, notably the Mark and Knights Templar degrees.As a diagnostic engineer, W Bro Elders was associated with the Institute <strong>of</strong> MarineEngineers for 40 years, and also the Society <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Engineers. He was honouredto be made a Freeman <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> London.W Bro Elders was noted for services within his local community and held various<strong>of</strong>fices for organisations in the Millhouse Green district and he had also been president<strong>of</strong> Thurlstone Brass Band and an <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>of</strong> Penistone Conservative Association.W Bro John F Bird - noted Dales figureW BRO JOHN F BIRD was Initiated into Chevin Lodge No 6848 in July 1968 and becameMaster in 1982. He became a Joining Member <strong>of</strong> Vale <strong>of</strong> Nidd Lodge No 4984 in 1986.He was appointed Provincial Grand Registrar in 1990, serving for two years.Grand Rank as Past Assistant Grand Registrar followed in 1993 and in 1994 he wasInstalled Assistant Provincial Grand Master at Harrogate. The following year he wasappointed Senior Grand Deacon within Grand Lodge.When he resigned as APGM in 2001 he was the longest serving Assistant in the<strong>Province</strong>.In the Holy Royal Arch, W Bro Bird was Exalted into Fairfax Chapter No 3255 in 1979and became First Principal in 1993.
