In 2009 wereceived 61 enquiries; in 2010 – 160 andso far in 2011 – 18.These enquiries are handled bymembers of the ProvincialCommunications Committee. They willinitially speak to the gentleman who willbe introduced to a Lodge close to hishome address and which meets on aconvenient night. The introduction doesnot carry any recommendation or supportfrom the committee. It remains theresponsibility of each Lodge to undertakeits own assessment and enquiriesregarding a potential candidate, beforeconsidering him for proposal into theLodge.W Bro Andrew Brown, of Rokeby LodgeNo 6301,has been appointed to adviseLodges on Open Events, either to attractnew candidates or to educate the generalpublic. He has already run a number ofsuccessful meetings in Area 2 and hisexperience will be helpful to Lodges whowish to set up and run their own.W Bro Ian R LewisThe Great Yorkshire Show continues toenable us to promote Freemasonry, inconjunction with the Province of YorkshireN & E. Reaction from the general publicto our stand continues to be very good,especially when they realise the good wedo in our communities. The stand for thisyear’s show, which takes place between12 and 14 July, is being organised by WBro Roger Newhouse.One of our successful projects isTeddies for Loving Care. Here we provideAccident and Emergency units ofhospitals within West Yorkshire with teddybears for medical staff to give to adistressed child to help calm them.A Brother recalled how his four-year-oldgranddaughter went into hospital for anemergency operation. Before theoperation she was in tears at which stageshe was given a pink Masonic teddy.Calm was restored and the teddy washeld tightly going into and coming out oftheatre and ever since. Mum thinkswhoever set up TLC is “a genius”.In 2010 we distributed 11,690 teddiesthroughout the Province. PLAQUE IN THE REDLION PUB MARKS230 YEARS OFFREEMASONRYIN DONCASTER . . .WHEN Bro Doug King, of St George’sLodge No 242, enjoyed a coffee in theRed Lion public house, Doncaster, henoticed a plaque on the wallcommemorating the origins of the StLeger horse race in 1776.He thought, wouldn’t it be nice to havea similar memento marking theestablishing of Freemasonry in Doncaster230 years ago when St George’s Lodgewas formed in 1780After discussing this with themanageress, who was keen to encouragelocal connections, Bro King took his ideato the Lodge. Permission was sought andgranted from the R W Provincial GrandLesley Pickersgill’s picture shows, from left: Doug King, Mike Brearley, Chris Kitchen, Emma Sayles(Wetherspoons), Tony Brailsford and Peter BrindleyMaster and a unique plaquecommissioned. Many membersof the public seemed absorbed by whatwas happening and what was said aboutFreemasonry and the history of StGeorge’s Lodge, together with itscontributions to the town and community,including petitioning and gaining twosubstantial grants last year from thePGM’s fund.GRAND PREFECT'S AMBITION REALISED!IT was a happy occasion for all when R W Bro Sydney John Bruton Barlow, DistrictGrand Prefect for Yorkshire, Allied Masonic Degrees, realised an ambition to adda new Council during his term of office.So it was that on Tuesday, 1 March this year a new Council, South Riding No 243,was Consecrated in Doncaster following an idea initiated by Bro Ian Colin Smith.A delightful ceremony was conducted by M W Bro Michael Edward Herbert,Grand Master, at the Masonic Hall, Priory Place, Doncaster.W Bro George Henry Philip Birch, Past Provincial Grand Master in the MarkDegree, was Installed as the first Master by R W Bro Barlow. Bro James BennettTruswell, the Mark Provincial Grand Master, was Senior Warden and Bro SmithJunior Warden.The Grand Master presented to the Council a set of breast jewels, one of eachdegree, to be used during the ceremonies. The Brethren responded withacclamation and W Bro Birch thanked M W Bro Herbert accordingly.The meeting was followed by an excellent luncheon, when the 62 Brethrenincluded four prospective joining members and three of the seven candidates whohave completed forms for membership.Meeting dates are the third Tuesday in May and June and the second Tuesday inSeptember. To qualify as a member of the Allied Masonic Degrees, it is necessaryto be or have been a member of a Royal Arch Chapter and a Mark Master Mason.The Founders are pictured with the Grand Master and District Grand Prefect.KNIGHTS TEMPLARIN 150 - YEARCELEBRATIONS . . .A SPECTACULAR Gala Dinner held at theRoyal Armouries, Leeds, in October 2010,was a fitting end to celebrations of theKnights Templar Province of West Yorkshiremarking the 150 years since its formationin February, 1860.The day had begun in fine style when 200Knights of the Province, in full regalia, metfor the Sesquicentenary Provincial Priorymeeting at Batley Enterprise College. TheProvincial Prior, Right Eminent Kt PaulGrafton, who presided over the meeting,was pleased to welcome the Very High andRight Eminent Great Seneschal, Malcolm E.Slater, as the principal guest, together withmany other distinguished Knights Templarfrom all over the country.The meeting also heralded the launch ofa commemorative book written by Em KtFred Cooper chronicling the history of theProvince, tracking its development throughthe reigns of its 16 Provincial Priors. Thebook, simply entitled ‘150 Years of TheProvincial Priory’, firmly places thedevelopment of Knights Templar against thesocial and industrial changes that tookplace in England over this period.The formal proceedings having beencompleted only hours earlier, over 400Knights, with family and friends, reconvenedthe same evening at the Royal Armouriesand were treated to a wonderful occasion.The Provincial Prior was delighted topresent a donation of £15,000 to the St.John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital, after whichmusical entertainment was provided bythe Rothwell Temperance Band, achampionship band regularly in the top fivein Britain.39
