SAD END OF AN ERAAS DORIC LODGENo 4073 CLOSES . . .MEMBERS of Doric Lodge No 4073 didnot look forward to their regular meetingon Monday 22 November 2010. After anumber of years of steady decline and theincreasing average age of members, itwas agreed, reluctantly, that the Warrantshould be returned to the M W The GrandMaster and that this would be their lastmeeting. The members, together with 50-plusguests, welcomed the R W ProvincialGrand Master, John K. Clayton, and aProvincial deputation comprising W BroStewart G Carley, Assistant ProvincialGrand Master, W Bro John Rushworth,Provincial Grand Secretary and W BroRobert W Bowhill, Provincial GrandDirector of Ceremonies, at the MasonicHall, Charles Street Bingley. The R W Provincial Grand Masteraccepted the gavel and listened as theBrethren approved donations to somefour different charities and the election ofthree trustees, appointed to wind up theaffairs of the Lodge.W Bro Michael D Edmondson, who hadfor many years been the Lodge’s charitysteward, presented a brief history of theLodge. He explained how it came intobeing by the need of the members ofAcacia No 2321, Doric’s Mother Lodge. They had grown so large that progressionhad become very difficult and to form anew Lodge was the best solution. The first10 years had seen continued growth witha number of double ceremonies being thenorm. He explained how the Lodge had somany pieces of table silver by the effortsof the Stewards of the Lodge and hethanked the present members of Acaciafor their support in recent months. The R W Provincial Grand Masteraccepted collars of office and letters ofresignation from the Brethren, before theMaster, W Bro James A K Shallcross, gave the last address to the officers. Hemade a most moving tribute to recentlydeparted Brethren and delivered whatwas a very emotional address with dignity.W Bro Shallcross surrendered theWarrant to R W Bro Clayton, whoaccepted it, with sadness, on behalf of theM W The Grand Master. The Master alsohanded in his collar and Hall Stone LodgeJewel, saying it had been worn with prideby Masters since its presentation inUnited Grand Lodge by the late ProGrand Master, the Right Hon LordAmpthill, in 1924.Thus ended 90 years of Doric Lodge No4073. All who had played a part in its finalmeeting did so with sincerity and Brotherlylove. This was a sad day but the sadnesswas not on open display. The FestiveBoard proved that Doric Lodge truly hadbeen a “Happy Lodge.”•Picture shows W Bro Edmondsonpresenting one of several chequesdistributed by Doric on its closure.
