Computing Machinery and Intelligence 68Turing took “cold comfort” in the idea that paranormalphenomena might be reconcilable in some way with wellestablishedscientific theories. We differ with him. We suspecthat if such phenomena such as telepathy, precognition, andtelekinesis turned out to exist (and turned out to have heremarkable properties typically claimed for them).the laws ofphysics would not be simply amend able to accommodate them; onlya major revolution in our scientific world view could do themjustice. One might look forward to such a revolution withsadness and perplexity. How could the science that had workedfor so well for so many things turn out to be so wrong? Thechallenge of rethinking al of science from its most basicassumptions on up would be a great intellectual adventure, butthe evidence that we need to do this has simply failed toaccumulate over the years.D.R.H.D.C.D.
