WORSHIP AND SPIRITUAL LIFEBlessing <strong>of</strong> animals onSt. Francis Dayopportunities, as well as other spiritual disciplines form a found<strong>at</strong>ion for thespiritual growth and nourishment <strong>of</strong> the entire LSTC community.Healthy LifeRecognizing the importance <strong>of</strong> physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being foracademic, pr<strong>of</strong>essional and personal sustainability and excellence, the Office <strong>of</strong> thePastor to the Community assists students in a variety <strong>of</strong> ways to tend their bodies,souls, and rel<strong>at</strong>ionships.Physical Health and WellnessAt the beginning <strong>of</strong> each academic year, <strong>at</strong> orient<strong>at</strong>ion, the Office <strong>of</strong> the Pastor tothe Community provides a health resource fair <strong>of</strong>fering a wealth <strong>of</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ionabout staying healthy.Through an agreement with the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong>, members <strong>of</strong> theseminary community have access to the university’s <strong>at</strong>hletic complex loc<strong>at</strong>ed acrossthe street from LSTC’s campus. For a reasonable annual fee, community members96
WORSHIP AND SPIRITUAL LIFEcan use the swimming pool, weight room, racquetball courts, step and rowingmachines, st<strong>at</strong>ionary bikes, and an indoor track. The Office <strong>of</strong> the Pastor to theCommunity processes memberships to the facility.Students regularly (weekly) organize basketball, volleyball, and soccer gamesin the gymnasium <strong>of</strong> St. Thomas the Apostle C<strong>at</strong>holic Church, one block east <strong>of</strong>LSTC. Sometimes a students vs. faculty/staff basketball game is held. The prize isthe coveted “Presidential Shoe” award.In addition to planned activities, many members <strong>of</strong> the community walk, run,or bicycle to keep fit. Paved p<strong>at</strong>hs along Lake Michigan make it possible to walk,jog, and bicycle the five miles to downtown <strong>Chicago</strong>.The Office <strong>of</strong> the Pastor to the Community shares inform<strong>at</strong>ion about physiciansand dentists who accept the insurance <strong>of</strong> LSTC students, faculty, and staff.Pastoral Care and SupportThe Office <strong>of</strong> the Pastor to the Community maintains a list <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals outsidethe seminary community who can provide consult<strong>at</strong>ion, counseling, advocacy,or medi<strong>at</strong>ion for students. The pastor to the community works collabor<strong>at</strong>ivelywith members <strong>of</strong> the LSTC faculty and staff as well as student leaders to providecommunity-building opportunities and resources for conflict negoti<strong>at</strong>ion.The pastor to the community engages in pastoral care with members <strong>of</strong> theLSTC community, with special <strong>at</strong>tention to the needs <strong>of</strong> degree program students.Spiritual LifeIn the role <strong>of</strong> Cornelsen Director for Spiritual Form<strong>at</strong>ion, the pastor to thecommunity encourages each student, faculty, and staff member to develop adiscipline <strong>of</strong> personal Bible study and prayer, and helps form spiritual growthgroups for this purpose, particularly for first-year M.Div. students through theChristian Life Community (CLC) program.The director <strong>of</strong> spiritual form<strong>at</strong>ion develops and supervises a host <strong>of</strong> Growthin Faith (GIF) activities intended to encourage and support strong, vibrantfaith. Students in all degree programs, as well as their family members, may takeadvantage <strong>of</strong> these opportunities for strengthening their spiritual lives. Examples <strong>of</strong>the many opportunities <strong>of</strong>fered are: “Journey to Wholeness: An At-Home PrayerRetre<strong>at</strong>,” “Speaking One’s Truth in Love: The Art <strong>of</strong> Non-Blameful Confront<strong>at</strong>ion,”“Let’s Talk! Living Our Multicultural Story,” and workshops on liturgical dance,beer-brewing, and knitting prayer shawls.The Spiritual Friends Program connects individual students with spiritualdirectors—clergy and laity from a variety <strong>of</strong> Christian traditions who serve as<strong>of</strong>f-campus mentors with whom students can safely pray, converse, and discern.Students may make arrangements for entering a spiritual direction rel<strong>at</strong>ionshipthrough the Cornelsen Director <strong>of</strong> Spiritual Form<strong>at</strong>ion. The Spiritual FriendsProgram is supported by a gift to the seminary, is free for students up to a certainnumber <strong>of</strong> sessions, and may be taken for Growth in Faith credit.97
