Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Theology</strong>MASTER OF THEOLOGYThe master <strong>of</strong> theology (Th.M.) degree is a second master’s degree designed to equipstudents with fuller knowledge and insight concerning a focused area or discipline<strong>of</strong> theological study than th<strong>at</strong> acquired <strong>at</strong> the M.Div. or M.A. level. For studentsadmitted into the Ph.D. program <strong>at</strong> LSTC, the Th.M. constitutes the first stage <strong>of</strong>the doctoral program.Fields <strong>of</strong> StudyStudents in the master <strong>of</strong> theology (Th.M.) degree program choose from five areas<strong>of</strong> concentr<strong>at</strong>ion: <strong>Lutheran</strong> ministry studies, biblical studies, historical studies,theological studies, and world Christianity and mission.The Th.M. in <strong>Lutheran</strong> ministry studies is designed for students who desire toacquire the knowledge, insight, and skills needed for visionary leadership in <strong>Lutheran</strong>ministry for today’s world. This degree program provides an <strong>at</strong>tractive option forLSTC affili<strong>at</strong>es who have completed their M.Div. or equivalent <strong>at</strong> another institutionand are spending their <strong>Lutheran</strong> year <strong>at</strong> LSTC.The program in biblical studies is <strong>of</strong>fered in two forms, one <strong>of</strong> which includeswork in both the Old and the New Testament, the other concentr<strong>at</strong>ing in onetestament.The student in historical studies may work generally on the history <strong>of</strong> theChristian tradition or may concentr<strong>at</strong>e on a particular period or problem.Theological studies in the Th.M. program consist primarily <strong>of</strong> work incontemporary theology with extensive <strong>at</strong>tention to its historical background.The program in world Christianity and mission involves students in missiology,ecumenical rel<strong>at</strong>ions, cultural environment, and world religions, as well as in therel<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the church to the social and political situ<strong>at</strong>ion in various areas <strong>of</strong> theworld. Those on furlough from overseas ministries may find this program <strong>of</strong> specialinterest.General Requirements and Time LimitRequirements in the Th.M. program include:• six courses <strong>at</strong> the advanced gradu<strong>at</strong>e level,• one or two biblical languages or a modern research language, depending on area<strong>of</strong> study, and• a comprehensive examin<strong>at</strong>ion.Students must complete all requirements for the Th.M. degree within four yearsfrom the d<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> their first course registr<strong>at</strong>ion.Transfer <strong>of</strong> CreditsThe division in which students are engaged in Th.M. work may grant a transfer <strong>of</strong>credit for one semester course from an accredited institution th<strong>at</strong> is determined to becomparable in level to the advanced gradu<strong>at</strong>e seminars in the Th.M./Ph.D. programs55
