MASTER OF ARTS IN MINISTRYConcentrationsM.A.T.S. and M.A.M. candidates may develop an area of concentration in anydiscipline or specialization represented by the LSTC faculty. The professors in aspecific field of study determine which courses are essential for a concentration inthat field and identify pertinent related courses. A concentration requires six courseswhich may include those used to fulfill M.A.T.S. or M.A.M. requirements. At leastfour of the courses must be electives at the 400 level or above.EmphasesAn emphasis is a program of study designed by one or more faculty membersthat allows students to focus on a specific field of study in order to enhance theirministry preparation or to prepare for further graduate study. LSTC offers anumber of emphases: biblical studies, environmental ministry, religion and science,urban ministry, African descent, Hispanic ministry, Asian American, AmericanIndian and Native Alaskan, and interfaith studies. Descriptions of these emphasesmay be found on pages 28-32.ELCA Lay Ministry PreparationStudents intending to serve as associates in ministry, deaconesses, or diaconal ministersof the ELCA should establish a relationship with their synodical candidacy committee.An endorsement and approval process similar to that for ordained ministry, thoughabbreviated because of the shorter program, is available for M.A.M. students. Thedirector of the M.A. programs and the coordinator for candidacy are available to advisestudents about the candidacy process.Field StudiesM.A.M. students engage in supervised ministry practice. ELCA candidates for layrostered ministry complete 600 hours of work and a project (200 hours—whichmay be used as the fulfillment of the summative evaluation), which are supervisedby the director of field education. Students of other faith traditions may (1) takeMinistry in Context, a year-long supervised ministry course that includes a fieldplacement and monthly seminar, or (2) a basic unit of Clinical Pastoral Education.Program OptionsCredit for Previous StudyM.A.T.S. and M.A.M. candidates may petition to gain credit by examination forany of the core course requirements. They may also petition to substitute a moreadvanced course for the core course if prior coursework has been successfullycompleted (B or higher) that covers the basic material of the core course.Cross-RegistrationThe seminary strongly encourages its students to make use of the rich varietyof courses offered in other Chicago area seminaries. MASTER OF ARTS IN MINISTRYThe registrar publishes a list of courses that are suitable for substitution of corerequirements each year.Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)Both M.A.T.S. and M.A.M. candidates may receive one elective credit for CPE.M.A.M. students using CPE to fulfill the field studies requirement may gainelective credit for a unit of CPE that is completed after the basic field studiesrequirement is met.Advanced Standing with CreditInternational students who enroll at LSTC for a full academic year may earn theM.A.T.S. degree provided that they are assigned sufficient advanced standing onthe basis of previous masters level theological study. Students must complete at leasteight courses at LSTC, including the summative evaluation, in order to qualifyfor the M.A.T.S. degree. All students eligible for advanced standing may contactthe director of M.A. programs, who reviews the relevant academic records anddetermines what advanced standing may be granted.Dual Degree ProgramIn consultation with the University of Chicago School of Social ServiceAdministration, LSTC offers a coordinated program of studies. Students mayearn the M.A.T.S. or M.A.M. degree from LSTC and the A.M. degree from theUniversity of Chicago (the equivalent to a master of social work degree). For moreinformation, see page 32.27
