OPTIONSethics and social analysis and other rel<strong>at</strong>ed fields, including courses <strong>of</strong>fered by theWashington Theological Consortium.<strong>Lutheran</strong> Seminary Program in the Southwest (LSPS)LSTC and Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, share responsibilityfor the <strong>Lutheran</strong> Seminary Program in the Southwest, which is known for its uniquecultural and linguistic accent in theological educ<strong>at</strong>ion. Through its TEEM program(Theological Educ<strong>at</strong>ion for Emerging Ministries), LSPS helps students develop skillsand sensitivity needed for ministry among people <strong>of</strong> an Hispanic cultural background.Its particular areas <strong>of</strong> emphasis include ethnic specific ministry, inner city and ruralministry, renewal <strong>of</strong> congreg<strong>at</strong>ions in decline, and innov<strong>at</strong>ive mission starts. Thetwo faculty colleagues <strong>at</strong> LSPS earned the Ph.D. degree <strong>at</strong> LSTC. Its urbanloc<strong>at</strong>ion lends a unique character to its work in the field <strong>of</strong> rural, town and country, andsuburban ministry.<strong>Chicago</strong> is recognized throughout North America and around the world as thecenter <strong>of</strong> a vast network <strong>of</strong> intern<strong>at</strong>ional agribusiness concerns and activities. The<strong>Chicago</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trade, several farm implement manufacturing corpor<strong>at</strong>ions, and avariety <strong>of</strong> reporting and forecasting agencies make <strong>Chicago</strong> a center <strong>of</strong> planning forand influence upon the agricultural sector. Thus the dynamics <strong>of</strong> the city and <strong>of</strong> ruralAmerica are closely interrel<strong>at</strong>ed and interdependent.Each J-Term the seminary <strong>of</strong>fers a rural ministry immersion course, a travelseminar which draws on the expertise both <strong>of</strong> noted rural analysts and <strong>of</strong> pastorsand lay leaders carrying on dynamic rural ministries in the Midwest. This coursehas been developed byrural ministry leadersfrom Midwest synodsin collabor<strong>at</strong>ionwith LSTC facultypartners. It providesopportunities forseminarians to livein a rural area andto particip<strong>at</strong>e in theactivities <strong>of</strong> ruralcongreg<strong>at</strong>ions andcommunities.38
