DOCTOR OF MINISTRYEcumenical Doctor <strong>of</strong> MinistryThe Ecumenical Doctor <strong>of</strong> Ministry program, with concentr<strong>at</strong>ions in cross-culturalstudies, liturgy, spirituality, Hispanic theology and ministry, and educ<strong>at</strong>ing forwitness is sponsored by the C<strong>at</strong>holic Theological Union, the <strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>School</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong> and McCormick Theological Seminary. Concentr<strong>at</strong>ionsenable participants to advance the integr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> their knowledge and skills inspecific ministry areas. Students apply and may m<strong>at</strong>ricul<strong>at</strong>e through any <strong>of</strong> the threeparticip<strong>at</strong>ing seminaries, which would be the degree-granting school.Cross-cultural Studies Concentr<strong>at</strong>ionThis concentr<strong>at</strong>ion is for persons who already have experience in cross-culturalministry who are not members <strong>of</strong> the culture in which they serve or are ministeringin a minority culture. In the l<strong>at</strong>ter case the minister may or may not be a member <strong>of</strong>th<strong>at</strong> same minority culture.Degree work helps students develop tools for analyzing cultures, communic<strong>at</strong>ingacross cultural boundaries, and using differing styles <strong>of</strong> leadership appropri<strong>at</strong>e toliving on cultural boundaries.Liturgy Concentr<strong>at</strong>ionThis concentr<strong>at</strong>ion is for persons who already have experience in liturgical ministries.It is designed to enable students to make the entire worship event more effective. Bycombining historical and system<strong>at</strong>ic studies with emerging pastoral methods studentswill learn to construct worship in light <strong>of</strong> liturgical traditions and to assess theeffectiveness <strong>of</strong> worship in particular communities.Spirituality Concentr<strong>at</strong>ionThe concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in spirituality is designed to enhance the reflective and pastoralskills <strong>of</strong> those who wish to foster spiritual development through leadership withinChristian communities. The concentr<strong>at</strong>ion emphasizes the leader’s growth intheological, historical, and cross-cultural awareness as well as in pastoral expertise.Educ<strong>at</strong>ing for Witness Concentr<strong>at</strong>ionThis concentr<strong>at</strong>ion is designed for those who assume leadership in educ<strong>at</strong>ingbelievers both in the knowledge and in the practice <strong>of</strong> their faith. It combinesreligious educ<strong>at</strong>ion, communic<strong>at</strong>ions, proclam<strong>at</strong>ion, wh<strong>at</strong> Roman C<strong>at</strong>holics call“evangeliz<strong>at</strong>ion” and c<strong>at</strong>echesis with the study <strong>of</strong> key religious values and practices(e.g., peace-building, the promotion <strong>of</strong> justice, etc.). The concentr<strong>at</strong>ion invitesstudents to consider together such key values and practices side by side with thestr<strong>at</strong>egic means for forming people in these values and practices.Hispanic <strong>Theology</strong> and MinistryHispanic <strong>Theology</strong> and Ministry models pastoral y teología en conjunto inpreparing leaders for this fastest growing popul<strong>at</strong>ion in our churches.67
