DOCTOR OF MINISTRYDoctor <strong>of</strong> MinistryLSTC provides two doctor <strong>of</strong> ministry programs through partnerships with otherseminaries. The ACTS Doctor <strong>of</strong> Ministry in Preaching involves six other <strong>Chicago</strong>seminaries in addition to LSTC. The seminary <strong>of</strong>fers the Ecumenical Doctor<strong>of</strong> Ministry with concentr<strong>at</strong>ions in cross-cultural ministries, liturgy, spirituality,educ<strong>at</strong>ing for witness, and Hispanic theology and ministry in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion withtwo other Hyde Park seminaries.Doctor <strong>of</strong> Ministry in PreachingThe ACTS Doctor <strong>of</strong> Ministry in Preaching is a joint program <strong>of</strong> seven memberseminaries <strong>of</strong> the Associ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong> Theological <strong>School</strong>s (ACTS): <strong>Chicago</strong>Theological Seminary, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, <strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>School</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Theology</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong>, McCormick Theological Seminary, North Park TheologicalSeminary, Northern Seminary, and Seabury Western Theological Seminary.Participants apply to the program through any <strong>of</strong> the particip<strong>at</strong>ing seminaries and theseminary through which one enters is also the degree-granting school. The programadmits a maximum class <strong>of</strong> 32 participants across schools.The ACTS D.Min. in Preaching program is a three-year program. During eachyear, participants spend three weeks during the summer in residence in <strong>Chicago</strong>taking courses, engaging in colloquies rel<strong>at</strong>ed to parish projects, developing theirthesis subjects, and other program topics.Year OneIn the first year <strong>of</strong> the program, participants complete two courses and onecolloquy during their three weeks in <strong>Chicago</strong>. The required course is “Preachingas Interpret<strong>at</strong>ion” and participants also select one elective. The colloquy focuses ondiagnostic evalu<strong>at</strong>ion and the cre<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the parish project. During the academic yearand between the first and second summers, participants complete a parish project intheir place <strong>of</strong> ministry in conjunction with persons in their ministry site.Year TwoDuring the second year, participants again complete two courses and one colloquyduring their three weeks in <strong>Chicago</strong>. The core course is “Preaching as Performance”and participants also select one elective. The colloquy serves to develop learninggoals for the program, design parish courses, initi<strong>at</strong>e the thesis subject, and examinethe sermon prepar<strong>at</strong>ion process. During the academic year and between the secondand third summers, participants complete another parish project in their place <strong>of</strong>ministry in conjunction with persons in their ministry site.Year ThreeDuring the third year, participants complete the last three-week summer residency in<strong>Chicago</strong>. The core course is “Preaching as Social Transform<strong>at</strong>ion” and participants alsoselect one elective. The colloquy continues the objectives <strong>of</strong> the two previous summers.64
