ACADEMIC AWARDSJames Kenneth Echols Prize for Excellence in PreachingThe James Kenneth Echols Prize is an annual preaching competition established andfunded by Mr. LeRoy T. Carlson, a long-time generous supporter <strong>of</strong> LSTC’s ministry,in honor <strong>of</strong> James Kenneth Echols, president <strong>of</strong> LSTC from 1997 - 2011. The goals<strong>of</strong> the prize are to promote the quality and excellence <strong>of</strong> preaching, to inspire students<strong>at</strong> LSTC to use fully their varied gifts to improve their preaching skills, to increasethe visibility and importance <strong>of</strong> preaching the gospel on the LSTC campus and theworld beyond, and to recognize the Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Echols and his manycontributions to LSTC by naming the prize in his honor.Edgar Krentz Prize for Greek ExegesisThis prize comes from an endowment established by the children <strong>of</strong> Edgar Krentz,Christ Seminary-Seminex Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emeritus <strong>of</strong> New Testament, to support theteaching and learning <strong>of</strong> biblical Greek <strong>at</strong> LSTC. Students are invited to submitan exegetical paper th<strong>at</strong> uses the Greek language to interpret a New Testamenttext theme. Evalu<strong>at</strong>ive criteria include the significance <strong>of</strong> the text or problemaddressed; the use <strong>of</strong> the Greek language and philological d<strong>at</strong>a in New Testamentinterpret<strong>at</strong>ion; quality and clarity <strong>of</strong> English writing; and applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> theconclusions reached to the contemporary church and/or world.<strong>Lutheran</strong> Confessions PrizeThe annual <strong>Lutheran</strong> Confessions Prize is made possible by a generous gift from ananonymous donor and is intended to foster contemporary research in the sixteenthcenturyevangelical <strong>Lutheran</strong> tradition. Essays submitted for consider<strong>at</strong>ion mustreflect intensive scholarly research in the <strong>Lutheran</strong> Confessions and/or the writings<strong>of</strong> the sixteenth-century <strong>Lutheran</strong> reformers, although they need not be limitedto those sources. Writers are encouraged to bring the Reform<strong>at</strong>ion heritage intointentional dialogue with the contemporary theological world.86
