M.DIV., M.A.T.S., AND M.A.M. OPTIONSLSTC students interested in African American ministry and theology. Somecourses <strong>at</strong> the seminary and in ACTS include field trips to African Americancongreg<strong>at</strong>ions, to communities throughout the <strong>Chicago</strong> area, and to variousorganiz<strong>at</strong>ions. Field educ<strong>at</strong>ion and internship opportunities are available inAfrican American congreg<strong>at</strong>ions.African American pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>at</strong> the seminary regularly <strong>of</strong>fer courses in AfricanAmerican religion, theology, and ethics.Students may cross-register for courses <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>at</strong> ACTS schools th<strong>at</strong> willequip them to better serve in the African American community. These courses,which sometimes may be substituted for a required course <strong>at</strong> the seminary, areregularly <strong>of</strong>fered by world-famous African and African American scholars andfaculty members.Through a coordin<strong>at</strong>ed effort by African and African American pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong>ACTS seminaries and the Divinity <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong>, speciallectures and programs are made available to students.Women’s Studies<strong>Chicago</strong> is a center <strong>of</strong> feminist/womanist scholarship and women <strong>of</strong> diverse social andethnic perspectives have found this city to be an enriching and challenging place to dotheir work. LSTC students who wish to focus on issues <strong>of</strong> women and ministry may takecourses with women scholars <strong>at</strong> any <strong>of</strong> the 12 seminaries in the Associ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong>Theological <strong>School</strong>s (ACTS) consortium.The required courses <strong>of</strong> the LSTC curriculum also incorpor<strong>at</strong>e women’sperspectives and concerns. Core and elective courses, conferences and discussionsaddress social issues <strong>of</strong> particular concern to women (e.g. sexual abuse, domesticviolence, the development <strong>of</strong> women’s voices and leadership, the interpret<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong>scriptural texts th<strong>at</strong> are hurtful to women, and God imagery in public worship). Aparticular specialty <strong>at</strong> LSTC is womanist theology and ethics.The Urban CPE Consortium, Inc., program includes sites <strong>at</strong> which studentsmay focus especially on women’s strength and suffering.Ample opportunities exist for women to learn from the gifts and struggles <strong>of</strong>peers who come from a variety <strong>of</strong> backgrounds. These include several programsfor nurture, challenge, and support. All women are welcome <strong>at</strong> the Intern<strong>at</strong>ionalWomen’s Bible Study, coordin<strong>at</strong>ed by the Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Student Affairs Officeand the pastor to the community. This group engages in both scripture study andinterpersonal support and dialogue.Off-Campus OpportunitiesTravel Seminars and Exchange ProgramsLSTC, the network <strong>of</strong> ELCA seminaries, and other <strong>Chicago</strong> seminaries provideopportunities for intern<strong>at</strong>ional study and travel for U.S. students because theyrecognize th<strong>at</strong>:• cre<strong>at</strong>ive theologies and educ<strong>at</strong>ional programs being developed outside the UnitedSt<strong>at</strong>es demonstr<strong>at</strong>e how the gospel can be contextualized in diverse situ<strong>at</strong>ions;35
