OPTIONS• seeing the United St<strong>at</strong>es from another point <strong>of</strong> view provides new eyes for themission in the U.S. and new sensitivity to the positive and neg<strong>at</strong>ive roles thiscountry plays around the world;• the global church abounds with fresh understandings <strong>of</strong> worship, music, andevangelism, and it has developed diverse ministries, such as c<strong>at</strong>echists andevangelists, to broaden students’ understanding <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> ministry;• we live in a pluralistic world in which other religions and ideologies encounter thegospel and <strong>of</strong>fer it a striking challenge;• studying for the ministry with and among students in other countries willenhance collegiality in ministry and deepen ideas about piety, faith, ethics, andspirituality.The January Term <strong>of</strong>fers many opportunities for travel, both within andoutside the United St<strong>at</strong>es. Students may enroll in travel seminars sponsored by any<strong>of</strong> the ACTS <strong>School</strong>s (see www.actschicago.org) or in one or more <strong>of</strong> the J-Termtravel seminars sponsored by the ELCA seminaries.LSTC particip<strong>at</strong>es in intern<strong>at</strong>ional exchange programs with partner institutionsoverseas and collabor<strong>at</strong>es with other ELCA seminaries and <strong>Lutheran</strong> bodies (such asthe <strong>Lutheran</strong> World Feder<strong>at</strong>ion) in assisting students who desire to study and learnin another country. Such exchanges do not normally take place until the secondyear <strong>of</strong> study or l<strong>at</strong>er. Early planning is essential since normally only one place isreserved for LSTC students <strong>at</strong> these institutions and <strong>of</strong>ten the exchange will nottake place unless LSTC and the cooper<strong>at</strong>ing institution each have a student eligibleto particip<strong>at</strong>e in the program. Students who desire to study overseas should consultwith their advisor and the academic dean.Students may also apply for an overseas internship through the ELCA’sHorizon Internship Program.Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Educ<strong>at</strong>ion (SCUPE)LSTC is a member <strong>of</strong> the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Educ<strong>at</strong>ion(SCUPE) which provides specific programs <strong>of</strong> study in urban pastoral educ<strong>at</strong>ion.SCUPE works cooper<strong>at</strong>ively with <strong>Chicago</strong>-area churches and community agenciesin its commitment to develop competent and cre<strong>at</strong>ive leaders who can work withthe realities <strong>of</strong> power, poverty, and pluralism found in cities.Every two years, SCUPE hosts the Congress on Urban Ministry, which bringstogether persons involved in urban ministry throughout the n<strong>at</strong>ion. The coordin<strong>at</strong>or<strong>of</strong> the urban ministry emphasis or the registrar can provide further inform<strong>at</strong>ion aboutSCUPE and the congress.Washington House <strong>of</strong> StudiesLSTC students have the opportunity to particip<strong>at</strong>e in the program <strong>of</strong> theWashington, D.C., House <strong>of</strong> Studies maintained by the <strong>Lutheran</strong> TheologicalSeminary <strong>at</strong> Gettysburg. This program <strong>of</strong>fers a chance to study firsthand thedynamics <strong>of</strong> political life in the n<strong>at</strong>ion’s capital while pursuing studies in political37
