COURSE OFFERINGSM-466 Pre-Christendom Preaching for a Postmodern WorldThis course promotes the early church genre <strong>of</strong> mystogogical preachingas an appropri<strong>at</strong>e response to our <strong>current</strong> situ<strong>at</strong>ion in which churchand culture are walking less and less in step. Students will carefullyread and discuss p<strong>at</strong>ristic sermons. They will then learn a method <strong>of</strong>contemporary mystagogy and preach two sermons.M-470 Six in SixThis class is designed as a day-long workshop experience for the studentto have the opportunity to explore in gre<strong>at</strong>er detail various aspects <strong>of</strong>a focused topic in pastoral care. The class will include both lecture andexperiential components in order to give a gre<strong>at</strong>er breadth and depth tothe understanding <strong>of</strong> the topic for the day. The class will also have guestlecturers and presenters who are skilled in the area <strong>of</strong> concentr<strong>at</strong>ion forthe day’s topic. Topics vary from year to year.M-471 Issues in Urban MinistryThis course is designed to assist the student in developing anunderstanding <strong>of</strong> the diversity <strong>of</strong> issues th<strong>at</strong> surface in urban ministry.Some issues to be considered include environmental concerns,leadership, racism, gender, and the struggle to survive in today’seconomy.M-476 Ministry in Urban Congreg<strong>at</strong>ionsThis course will enhance the ministry skills <strong>of</strong> students interestedin ministry in an urban congreg<strong>at</strong>ion. Students will be expected todevelop their own approach to ministry in an urban congreg<strong>at</strong>ion.M-520 Narr<strong>at</strong>ive Theory in Pastoral Care and CounselingThis course examines a particular theory <strong>of</strong> counseling (narr<strong>at</strong>ivetherapy, as developed by theorists Michael White, David Epston, JillFreedom, Gene Combs, and partners) theologically and biblically,and explores its potential relevance for parish-based pastoral care andcounseling situ<strong>at</strong>ions.M-551 Advanced HomileticsThis course is a class-determined investig<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> specific topics inpreaching. Participants will select two areas <strong>of</strong> preaching th<strong>at</strong> interestor challenge them—for example, stewardship sermons, propheticpreaching, preaching to children, preaching <strong>at</strong> funerals, etc. For eachtopic, students will make the topic present<strong>at</strong>ion one week and preacha sermon rel<strong>at</strong>ed to th<strong>at</strong> topic the next week. Prerequisite: M340Preaching or equivalent.134
