Much of the heatfrom the sunlight should be absorbed by some type of high -density material such asmasonry; after sunset, the heat will flow out of this "thermal mass", helping to keepthe house warm. Direct-gain windows should be oriented due south, although theorientation may be varied by as much as 30 degrees east or west of south withoutlosing much efficiency. Southerly views from the building site become an importantcriterion in site selection --you don't want huge southern windows showing youunattrative views. The typical early solarium of the 1970s projected out from the house,like na addition, and was glazed on the south, east, and west sides as well as theroof. The south wall was typically sloped. Today's solarium has been modified forgreater efficiency and typically is flush with the south wall of the house, therbyeliminating the loss of energy from the east and west walls. Surrounded by otherspaces, the solarium space can be an effective focus for the house, functioning like asolar "hearth". To minimize the overheating common in the early style solarium, the348
oof is not glazed and the south wall is vertical rather than sloped.
