Big PictureThe vast scale and complexity of our current situation requires a deep unders tandingof some critical factors. The idea that we have an environmental problem forinstance, is an indicator of the deceptive nature of the issues. In fact, we have ahuman problem of some kind that degrades the environment despite theenvironments best natural abilities to maintain balance and a healthy world. Somecritical issues that must be dealt with, in terms of the human problem, are well -articulated in the book Fatal Consumption: Rethinking Sustainable Development. Thequestion of why people havent acted already, given the obvious problems, must beunderstood if we are to have a chance of solving the problems. These humanproblems are outlined as follows in the book Fatal Consumption (pg 8-17):Separation of Action and Consequence Muchof the destruction caused by our modern way ofliving is not immediately visible or detectable.Temporally Delay in the effects of humanimpacts on the environment.Geographically The massive scale of the globaleconomys ability to move goods and dispose ofthem makes these connections invisible.Socially The modern evolution of products andservices that serve social requirements likeretirement living, daycares, employment, andhousing are highly separated both socially and bydistance, making a tight local integration nearlyimpossible.Intellectually The rationalized denial of theconnections between the causes of problems andtheir adverse effects.Ethically The lack of ethics applied tointellectual development of technology andadvertising, for instance.57
