Reconnecting with nature brings us closer to our children, family, friends, community, the earth, good food , fun, physical activity, free time, rest, relaxation, animals, plants, and the beauty of our natural surroundings. During times ofdifficulty, when there seems to be no hope, in the middle of our fast-paced, and attimes mindless modern life, we sense that something is not right. As Ferenc Matesays in his book, A Reasonable Life ,we will have to put humanity first again eachhumans physical needs and, just as important, theneeds of the human spirit. We need to put themfar ahead of the mythical importance of shorttermprofits, special interests, institutions, oreconomic systems whose preservation nowdictates how we live. (pg xii). Our economic system has evolved in support of the few with the greatest amount ofmoney. This system has been sold to the rest of us who can afford it. But this typeof wealth does not bring us more happiness nor does it take care to look afternature that sustains us, nor does it take care of the poor starving masses who are ourbrothers and sisters, our global family. Economics is not life. We must put life, awareness of connection and nature first again. We also need to change our institutions which are driven by our consumer -orientedsociety that drives the industrial commerce that does perhaps more damage than ourindividual lifestyles. These massive non -human systems will find it even harder tochange their ways. Their simple mission is profit above all else. Althoughinstitutions, such as the multinational corporation, are major contributors to theseproblems, their ability to make the changes required is inhibited by their lack ofconsciousness. Our institutions must be transformed in support of life and nature, not profits. Only you and I can make that happen. We must recognize car companies, power producers, forestry giants, multi-nationalfood companies, military suppliers, pharmaceutical companies, sewage treatmentutilities and many other large corporations for what they are. These companies areno different from present-day cigarette companies that have been convicted inUnited States Supreme Court. These companies were found guilty of knowingl yhiding the deadly effects of their products, including the pernicious addictiveproperties, in the name of profits. Keep in mind that these are the same people whorun the largest food companies as well and they will be found culpable again since44
