Effective Date: October 24, 2007Calculations for Surface TensionSurface tension (dynes/cm) = Sw * Nw * DN * DwSw = Surface tension of water at 25 o C or 77 o F (72.75 dynes/cm)Nw = water drop number etched on instrumentD = measured specific gravity (g/ml)N = # of solution dropsDw = water density (1.0 g/mL)PRECAUTIONS:1. Make sure the stalagmometer is clean (no sludge or film)2. No chips, cracks, etc3. Vertical placement4. No vibration5. 20 drops per minute rate (10 dynes/cm) +/- 1 drop per minute6. Performance checked with water. The number of drops etched on theinstrument shall be verified with deionized water to +/- 1 drop. If thenumber of drops are not within 1 drop, then the Stalagmometer shall becleaned. If the cleaning process does not bring the drop count within 1drop of the etched number on the instrument, then the operator shall:a) Purchase a new Stalagmometer; orb) Use the number of drops recorded for the distilled water run as(Nw) in the equation instead of the number of drops etched onthe Stalagmometer.7.
