Monsanto said it currently sells glyphosateproducts in Sri Lanka but did not confirm whether it sellssuch products in Central America.Dr. Daniel Goldstein, a Senior Science Fellow atMonsanto, said “glyphosate does not cause renal failure.”He said he was aware of the official findings from SriLanka, <strong>and</strong> that glyphosate contains phosphorus, anelement whose molecular similarity to arsenic can resultin small amounts of arsenic byproduct in quantities notthreatening to human health. But the “plausibility ofrelationship is virtually nil” between glyphosate <strong>and</strong> theSri Lankan kidney disease epidemic, Goldstein said.Dow Chemicals, which developed 2,4-D, did not respondto requests for <strong>com</strong>ment. Like glyphosate, the patent onproduction has expired <strong>and</strong> other <strong>com</strong>panies also produce<strong>pesticides</strong> containing 2,4-D.According to the Environmental Protection Agency,excessive quantities of glyphosate <strong>and</strong> 2,4-D in drinkingwater can cause damage to the kidneys. But little researchhas been conducted into other types of exposures, <strong>and</strong>particularly on long-term health effects on humans.“I'm appalled at how little [research] there is on humans,”said Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a Senior Research Scientist atthe Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Theherbicide-resistant GE crops absorb glyphosate throughdirect application <strong>and</strong> from the soil <strong>and</strong> it cannot bewashed off. It is in the food. Glyphosate has also beenfound in rivers, streams, air <strong>and</strong> rain.The thyroid is an endocrine organ that secretes thethyroid hormone. Thyroid dysfunction has been identifiedwith mood disorders. Depression is frequently associatedwith low levels of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism),while mood elevation is often associated with high levelsof thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). An endocrinedisrupting chemical (EDC) can cause erratic behavior.Recent studies have shown links between food additives<strong>and</strong> neuro<strong>toxicity</strong> in cells <strong>and</strong> hyperactive behavior inchildren. Incidents have been reported of laboratory rats<strong>and</strong> farm animals exhibiting uncharacteristic aggressive<strong>and</strong> anti-social behavior on being fed a diet consisting ofGMO soy or corn.Many scientific studies have shown links between thyroiddisruption <strong>and</strong> neurological diseases. “Thyroid hormonesare critical for development of the fetal <strong>and</strong> neonatalbrain ... Hypothyroidism in either the mother or fetusfrequently results in ... a high incidence of mentalretardation. ... numerous studies with rats, sheep <strong>and</strong>humans have reinforced this concept...” According to deCock et al, “Perinatal exposure to EDCs appears to beassociated with the occurrence of ASD [autism spectrumdisorder] as well as ADHD. Disruption of thyroidhormone function ... may offer an explanation for theobserved relations....” MacSweeney et al. report, “that themothers of 104 schizophrenic patients had: (1) asignificantly higher incidence of thyroid disease than acarefully matched control group; (2) significantly moreabortions, still-births <strong>and</strong> greater infant mortality. Thefindings <strong>and</strong> possible relevance of thyroid disease toschizophrenia are discussed.” Strong correlation wasshown between cancer of the thyroid <strong>and</strong> glyphosate useon corn <strong>and</strong> soy crops <strong>and</strong> that thyroid cancer affectswomen more than men. Data trends over time forneurological disorders are not readily available for tworeasons: they are not as well-studied as other diseases(cancer, diabetes etc.), <strong>and</strong> the diagnostic methods keepchanging. The experts argue over whether the increasesare real, or a by-product of changes in diagnostics alongwith greater attention given to these disorders in recenttimes. For example, a former diagnosis of mentalretardation might now result in a diagnosis of autism.Furthermore there is a large degree of overlap insymptoms. Typical manifestations of ADHD, such asdistractibility or hyperactivity are also present in pediatricbipolar disorder, for example.ChildrenADHD According to the New York Times, “an estimated6.4 million children ages 4 through 17 had received anA.D.H.D. diagnosis at some point in their lives, a 16percent increase since 2007 <strong>and</strong> a 41 percent rise in thepast decade.” From the Center for Disease Control(CDC), “rates of ADHD diagnosis increased an averageof 3% per year from 1997 to 2006 <strong>and</strong> an average of5.5% per year from 2003 to 2007. ... It is not possible totell whether this increase represents a change in thenumber of children who have ADHD, or a change in thenumber of children who were diagnosed.” It also makes agreat deal of difference who is doing the reporting:parents or doctors. The disorder affects boys more thangirls. Whatever the numbers, there seems to be anincreasing behavioral problem with our youth. Oursolution is to give them more chemicals in the form ofmood-altering drugs.Bipolar According to a 2007 report by Moreno et al.,“the annual number of office-based visits with adiagnosis of bipolar disorder was estimated to increase inyouth from 25 (1994-1995) to 1003 (2002-2003) per100,000 population, whereas in adults it increased from905 (1994-1995) to 1679 (2002-2003) per 100,000population. ... most youth bipolar disorder visits were bymales (66.5%), whereas most adult bipolar disorder visitswere by females (67.6%).”Autism The number of autistic children has explodedduring the last decade, <strong>and</strong> some are calling it anepidemic. There is great controversy over what is causingthis <strong>and</strong> whether all of it is real. “But many researchersnow say that at least part of the rise in autism is real <strong>and</strong>caused by something in the environment. Rather thanquibbling over recounts they are focusing on finding thecauses.”It was shown in previous articles that there has been ahuge increase in the amount of glyphosates applied tocorn <strong>and</strong> soy crops grown in the U.S. corresponding tothe rise in the percentage of corn <strong>and</strong> soy planted withgenetically engineered (GE) varieties. Those datarepresent only a portion of the total GE crops <strong>and</strong> amountof glyphosates applied. The USDA only collects data onGE crops for corn, cotton <strong>and</strong> soy. Since most of the corn(88%) <strong>and</strong> soy (94%) planted now is GE, these data givea representation of the rising trends in both GE crops <strong>and</strong>herbicide use.The amount of glyphosate applied to U.S. corn <strong>and</strong> soycrops is plotted against the prevalence of autism in one ofthe slide show graphs. The prevalence of autism wasdifficult to find <strong>and</strong> the values shown on this graph camefrom many sources using different methods <strong>and</strong> differentage groups. A better estimate was obtained from the U.S.Department of Education, which keeps track of schoolage children receiving services under the Individuals withDisabilities Education Act (IDEA). A second plot isshown using data from USDE for the number of autisticchildren receiving services. The correlation is quitestrong which may indicate that glyphosate is acontributing factor in the rise of autism.Elderly: Alzheimer's <strong>and</strong> senile dementiaThe elderly are susceptible because they may alreadyhave a great body burden of chemical exposure over theirlifetime <strong>and</strong> because some of their body processes areshutting down <strong>and</strong> hormonal disruptions can have a muchgreater effect on them.Continued on page 3635-- Traditional African Clinic July 2013
