IND.D.004.16 April 2004IV. CURRENT TRENDS IN HOTEL CLASSIFICATIONNew Informati<strong>on</strong> TechnologiesElectr<strong>on</strong>ic distributi<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> form of Cent<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>l Reservati<strong>on</strong> Systems (CRS) was initiallydeveloped in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1960’s by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> major airlines as a way of managing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir inventory andc<strong>on</strong>trolling <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rising number of flights and fares. Originally <strong>on</strong>ly used by airlinereservati<strong>on</strong> staff, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>1970’s CRS were g<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>dually made available to t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel agents tofacilitate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reservati<strong>on</strong> process and give access to inventory data. As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> systemsdeveloped, user demand and high capital costs prompted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> owners of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se systemsto expand <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir product offering from solely airline seat to include <strong>hotel</strong> accommodati<strong>on</strong>,car hire, cruises and almost every o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel product. This gave rise to today’s <strong>on</strong>estop-t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel-shops,i.e. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Global Distributi<strong>on</strong>s Systems (GDS). Four main companiesdominate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sector – Amadeus, Galileo, Worldspan and Sabre – with a number ofsmaller GDSs active regi<strong>on</strong>ally. Most GDSs subsequently developed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own CRSWith data structures more closely adapted to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir particular product (e.g. <strong>hotel</strong>s), linking<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m electr<strong>on</strong>ically to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GDS to gain access to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> powerful t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel agent market andpaying a t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>nsacti<strong>on</strong> fee to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GDS owners for each booking processed. The limited space available <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> display screens in CRSs and GDSs str<strong>on</strong>glyinfluenced <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> choice of criteria and abbreviati<strong>on</strong>s in which a <strong>hotel</strong> could be described forselling purposes. From <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perspective of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel agent, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se systems using a textbasedinterface are far from ideal as <strong>hotel</strong> sales and marketing tools, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y can provide<strong>on</strong>ly very sparse informati<strong>on</strong>.Since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> emergence in 1994 of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Web as an additi<strong>on</strong>al and competing electr<strong>on</strong>icdistributi<strong>on</strong> channel <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re has been a rising number of c<strong>on</strong>sumer-oriented websitesoffering a much wider <str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>nge of informati<strong>on</strong>, as well as booking facilities, some of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>meffectively bypassing both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel agent and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GDS to create a direct link to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>c<strong>on</strong>sumer. Once again, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> questi<strong>on</strong> of categorising <strong>hotel</strong>s for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> benefit of c<strong>on</strong>sumersor t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel professi<strong>on</strong>als (specifically <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel agent) has come to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fore. 4This prompted <strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> major third-party marketing and reservati<strong>on</strong> providers, Utell, aPegasus Soluti<strong>on</strong>s Company, to introduce its own <strong>hotel</strong> classificati<strong>on</strong> system.Phoenix (June 4, 2001) – Utell today introduced Utell selecti<strong>on</strong>s, an innovative approach thatcategorizes its portfolio of 6,400 <strong>hotel</strong>s to assist t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel agents in finding <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perfect <strong>hotel</strong> for clients.Utell selecti<strong>on</strong>s classifies Utell properties into well-defined categories, and is based where possible<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> American global industry publicati<strong>on</strong> Official <strong>Hotel</strong> Guide (OHG).Utell selecti<strong>on</strong>s provides global c<strong>on</strong>sistency in segmenting <strong>hotel</strong>s, since some <str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>nking systems, such as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> “star system,” vary from country to country. Utell selecti<strong>on</strong>s enables <strong>hotel</strong>s to matchcustomers’ expectati<strong>on</strong>s with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> experience, and uses a universally accepted t<str<strong>on</strong>g>ra</str<strong>on</strong>g>vel publicati<strong>on</strong>,OHG, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> foundati<strong>on</strong> for classificati<strong>on</strong>.Utell selecti<strong>on</strong>s segments <strong>hotel</strong>s into three core categories and four niche categories. All <strong>hotel</strong>s areclassified in <strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> core categories: luxury, superior and value. <strong>Hotel</strong>s can be fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ridentified as <strong>on</strong>e of four niche categories – style, resort, apartment or airport, dependent up<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> defined category criteria.4 Cf “An Overview of <strong>Hotel</strong> Electr<strong>on</strong>ic Distributi<strong>on</strong>”, Peter O’C<strong>on</strong>nor, PhD, Paper presented to IH&RA Chains Council, Dec 2003)- 63 -
