Introduction – Highlights of the auction
This catalogue presents important books and manuscripts from a variety of private
properties in a wide range of fields: cartography, natural science, architecture, travel,
art, fiction and philosophy.
Special attention should be brought to a fine
selection of works within the field of natural
science. Important works by notable scientists
from Isaak Newton to Niels Bohr are presented.
Furthermore we present several influential
first editions by some of the most important
authors of the French Enlightenment. The most
notable being the first edition of Rousseau’s
“Émile”, which had great impact on the philosophy
of the upbringing of children. The copy
here presented is furthermore mounted with
an autograph receipt signed by Rousseau.
The auction opens with a series of fine
cartographical works from the library of
The Royal Danish Geographical Society in
Copenhagen. The collection of atlases and
maps includes 10 volumes of the first edition
of Johannes Blaeu’s celebrated cartographic
masterpiece the “Atlas Maior”,
published in Amsterdam in 1662.
Among the many letters and manuscripts
we have given special attention to two
unique and exceptionally large collections
of photographs, autograph letters
and manuscripts written by the modernist
author Herman Bang, who was
one of Denmark’s most internationally
established authors of his time. With his
impressionistic style he revolutionized the
novelistic writing of the 1880s. His impact
on literary history, was widely recognized
by influential modernist artists abroad like
Claude Monet and Maxim Gorki.

The autograph letters of the two Herman Bang collections
give new and intriguing knowledge about Bang’s
many travels, personal life and troublesome mind.
Among the autograph material are also a number
of unpublished manuscripts which reveal hitherto
unknown insight into the literary working process of
Herman Bang. Especially the early manuscript leaves
from Bang’s most acclaimed novel “Stuk” are important
and of great literary interest as are the manuscript for
Bang’s article on his relationship with the world famous
Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.
The auction closes with one of the largest and
most well preserved collections of early, originally
printed scraps from the 19th century to be offered
for sale in Denmark in many years – the Jan
Hansen Scrap Collection. The collection of scraps
has been established during a life time and gives
a unique insight into the pictorial world of the
19th century. Several parts of the scrap collection
originates from other notable scrap collections,
e.g. The Lego Toy Collection.
The auction features several fine engraved
works. The most notable being the Danish
masterpiece “Flora Danica” which is the most
extensive illustrated work in the Danish history
of printing with 3240 handcoloured engravings
of Danish plants and flowers. Also worth
noting are the fascinating travel accounts of
Kircher “China Monumentis”, Olearius “Moscowitische
Reisebeschreibung” and Niehbuhr
“Beschreibung von Arabien”, all richly illustrated
with engravings.
We hope you will take an interest in the many varied features in this catalogue and
visit us at the auction either in Bredgade or online.

The Royal Danish
Geographical Society
40004018
The following 19 lots all derive from the library
“The Royal Danish Geographical Society” in
Copenhagen. The collection of atlases and
maps includes 10 volumes of the first edition
of Johannes Blaeu’s celebrated cartographic
masterpiece the “Atlas Maior”, published in Amsterdam
in 1662 with different volumes devoted
to specific parts of the world. Due to the high
standard and quality of engravings, ornaments,
typo graphy and paper “Atlas Maior” was the
most expensive book published during the 17th
century. For at long period the atlas was a status
symbol and the traditional state gift presented
by the Dutch government. The “Atlas Maior” is
known as the finest and most comprehensive
Baroque atlas, and the Latin edition remains
to this day one of history’s finest examples of
mapmaking.
Gerardus Mercator (15121594) was a Flemish
cartographer. He is remembered for the Mercator
projection world map named after him. Jodocus
Hondius (15631612), sometimes called Jodocus
Hondius the Elder to distinguish him from his son,
was a Flemish artist, engraver, and cartographer. He is
best known for his early maps and for reestablishing
the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator. He
helped establish Amsterdam as the center of cartography
in Europe in the 17th century. After Hondius'
death in 1612, his publishing work in Amsterdam was
continued by his widow and two sons, Jodocus II and
Henricus.
Newton's law of gravity
Isaac Newton: Philosophiæ naturalis principia
mathematica. Amsterdam: Sumptibus societatis
1714. First Amsterdam reprint of the second edition
published in 1713. Illustrated with engraved
title vignette, woodcuts in the text and one engraved
folding plate on page 465. With contemporary
autograph name on title and contemporary
autograph notes on flyleaf. Inner hinges worn.
Inner paste downs worn. Bound in contemporary
full vellum. Signs of wear.
Isaac Newton's (16431727) work "Principia Mathematica"
is considered "the greatest work in the
history of science. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had
certainly shown the way; but where they described
the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the
underlying universal laws. The "Principia" provided
the great synthesis of the cosmos, proving finally its
physical unity. Newton showed that the important
and dramatic aspects of nature that were subject to
the universal law of graviation could be explained,
in the mathematical terms, within a single physical
theory. [...] The same laws of gravitation and motion
ruled everywhere; [...] It was this grand conception
28
4019
4019
that produced a general revolution in human thought,
equalled perhaps only by that following Darwin's
"Origin of the Species" [...] The second edition of
"Principia" was not published until 1713" ("Printing
and the Mind of Man" # 161).
The second edition of Principia, here presented in a
rare first Amsterdam reprint from 1714, was revised
by Isaac Newton himself in order to improve its argu
ments. This was necessary partly because more
than 20 years had passed since the first edition was
pulished and new research had appeared e.g. new
comets had been found. Also the German mathematician
and polyhistor Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz
(16461716) had published theories that were close
to Newton's own, which forced him to sharpen his arguments
and therefore this edition was also provided
with a long antiLeibnizian preface by Newton's
editor Roger Cotes.
In the 1890s the Russian physiologist and physician
Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (18491936) was investigating
the gastric function of dogs by externalizing
a salivary gland so he could collect, measure, and
analyze the saliva and what response it had to food
under different conditions. He noticed that the dogs
tended to salivate before food was actually delivered
to their mouths, and set out to investigate this "psychic
secretion", as he called it. He was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1904 for his
research pertaining to the digestive system.
The letter is written to Valentin Fedoseevich (1845
1912) who was a famous Russian veterinarian
and the founder of the social veterinary practice i
Moscow. In 1902 he worked as chief of the veterinary
administration of the ministry of internal affairs.
he whishes to discuss with Fedoseevich concerning
The very first edition printed in Latin and far the most
superior printing to the pirated edition published by
Meurs. Athanasius Kircher (16021680) was a 17th
century German Jesuit scholar who were among the
fathers of modern science. He published around 40
works through his lifetime most notably in the fields
of Oriental studies, geology, and medicine. The many
works of Kircher's indicate his widespread interest
Kircher's most significant work. It is the first publication
on the philosophy of education. Rousseau's thoughts
on the naturalness of the child and the contradictions
this work was widely influential and are still present
in modern day philosophies on education and the
one of his most revolting works and it was censored in
fotografier af forfatteren – fra ungdom til
alderdom – samt mere end 220 breve sendt
fra knap 10 forskellige nationer. Dermed er
materialet ikke bare det mest omfattende fra
Bangs hånd udbudt på auktion nogensinde,
det dokumenterer også store dele af Herman
Bangs korte liv og kunstneriske produktion.
Dahl-familien
Dahls Mindelegat (kaldet ”Den lille Cavlingpris”,
I brevene giver
Herman Bang bl.a. råd om, hvordan Dahl gør
sine hoser grønne på bladredaktionerne rundt
68
Blandt materialet fra Herman Bangs forlægger
kendt. Bladene udgør de tid ligste stadier af
hovedværket ”Stuk” (1887). Bangmanuskripter
af så stor litteraturhistorisk betydning udbydes
kun yderst sjældent på auktion. (Kat. nr. 4057).
Forlæggeren Hirschsprung
Den anden brev- og manuskriptsamling på
auktionen hidrører fra Herman Bangs
forlægger på Det Schubotheske Forlag,
Einar Aage Hirschsprung (1869-1909), der
var søn af grundlæggeren af Hirschsprungs
samling Heinrich Hirschsprung. Brevene
er skrevet i perioden 1901 til ca. 1908 og
omhandler i høj grad arbejdet med både nye
bøger (bl.a. ”Ludvigsbakke”, ”Det graa Hus”
(10. jan. 1908).
Desuden dokumenteres Bangs ofte meget
presserende pengeproblemer i brevene til
Hirschsprung – næsten i hvert eneste brev
slutter i denne stil: ”Giv mig blot 15 kr. Vi
har ingen Mad i Huset.”
Eksil-forfatter
Flere af Dahl-brevene er sendt fra Nakskov,
hvorfra Bang betegner sig selv som en
DEN INTERNATIONALE HERMAN BANG
70
Den skandaløse
Bang
Set med samtidens øjne var Herman
Bang en fremmed fugl. Den selvbevidste
homoseksuelle kunstner med det
store talent for at skrive, instruere og
polemisere provokerede mange.
konfi skeret. Senere oplag fi ndes derfor
kun i kraf tigt redigerede udgaver. (Kat.
nr. 4061).
Vurdering 4.0006.000 kr.
1889]). Senere kan han dog endelig sætte det
sidste smertelige punktum: ”Igaar blev min
Bog færdig. Og aldrig har min Stilling været
så fortvivlet som i dette Øjeblik. Det kan slet
ikke beskrives.” (u.å. [maj 1889]).
I det hele taget fylder Bangs sindsstemninger
meget i de mange breve. ”Nej, min ven,
Dahl (f. Hasselbalch, 1862-1915). Hun er ikke
nævneværdigt beskrevet nogen steder i litteraturen
om Bang, men er den kvinde, som
hans lille roman ”Sommerglæder” (1902) er
dedikeret til. Brevene viser imidlertid, at Herman
min bedste Ven” (7. jun. 1907). Den hengiven
hed og indforståethed, som udtrykkes i
både breve og dedikationseksemplarerne i
samlingen, viser, at Herman Bang i Olga Dahl
Signe (kaldet Søster) i november 1911.
støt stigende anerkendelse – dog primært i
udlandet.
impressionistiske forfatter i verden.
I Danmark lod anerkendelsen imidlertid vente
for dansk litteratur. I 1906 blev han, som så
ofte før, offer for smædefuld kritik. Denne
Her
Andersenpastiche. (Kat. nr. 4053)
I mit skønne
Fædreland tilgiver man mig ikke, at jeg
trodser Aander.
[…] Hvorhen man rejser er egentlig saa ligegyldigt.
Sine Kufferter (sine Sejre) skal man
dog slæbe med allevegne.” (5. juni 1908).
Stemningen steg til Begejstring. Den
Herman Bang er forfatter til en
række impressionistiske romaner,
som vakte både begejstring og
misundelse blandt digterkollegaer,
da han brød igennem i 1880’erne.
Bangs litterære varemærke blev
beskrivelsen af de stille, provinsielle
kvinder uden udsigt til hverken
forløsning eller frigørelse. De otte
ejste forfatter – på linje med H.C. Andersen
og Johannes V. Jensen. Bangs breve til Olga
fra europaturnéen svinger fra intense skildringer
af byer og folk til kortfattede tilkendegivelser
om triumfer eller fi askoer – ”Det var
virkelig rørende. Jeg maa være meget elsket
i dette besynderlige Land,” (20. dec. 1911)
Men allerede tidligt under turnéen skriver
sted.” (Helsingfors, 20. nov. 1911). Hans for -
på vej over Atlanten: ”Stormen
var uhyre og uhyre skøn. Et Øjeblik skjalv
alle.
(11. jan.
Astor i New York den 22. januar – blot få
dage før hans død.
Et alsidigt talent
Herman Bang rejste meget. Både for
at komme væk fra skandaler og dårlig
omtale, men også for at tjene penge.
Han kunne aldrig leve af sin litteratur
alene. Han ernærede sig derfor
primært som journalist ved forskellige
blade og aviser overalt i Europa. Hans
ligefremme skildringer af det moderne
liv, der krydrede det seriøse med det
lette, var meget populære.
Herudover var han en elsket oplæser
og instruktør både i København og
Paris. Hans opsætninger af bl.a. Henrik
Ibsens og August Strindbergs værker
på L’Oevres teatret i Paris i 1890’erne
fi k afgørende betydning for deres
anerkendelse og udbredelse i hele
verden.
Manuskriptet fundet i Dahlsamlingen
(Kat. nr.
between 24 December 1888 to 22 January 1912.
Sent from Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden,
Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia and the USA.
The material comprises 72 letters, 5 telegrams
and 50 postcards including a hitherto unknown
photographic postcard of Herman Bang (with a
rare smile) posing with a pantomime group he
was travelling with in November 1911. Dated 9.
November 1911. Enclosed 1 autograph letter by
the Norwegian writer Rosenkrandtz Johnsen to
Herman Bang + 2 orig. photographs of The Thomas
D. Dee Hospital, Ogden, Utah where Herman
Bang died.
This unique collection covers more than half of Herman
Bang's lifetime and gives a unique view into
the art, life and mind of one of the greatest Danish
writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Bang introduced
a new impressionistic writing style in Danish
and European literature. Abroad from Germany to
Russia his works were at first much more positively
received than in Denmark and he was a great inspiration
for many including the author Thomas Mann
(18751955) and the painter Claude Monet (1840
1926), who claimed, Bang was the first impressionistic
writer in the world.
74
4052
The first part of the letters were written from 1888
1891 to Kristian Dahl (18611934) a journalist friend
of Bang. These letters are concerned with journalistic
matters as well as Herman Bang's thoughts when
writing one of his most acknowledged impressionistic
novels: "Tine" (1889). The majority of the letters were
written to Kristian Dahl's wife Olga Dahl (18621915)
the woman he dedicated his novel "Sommerglæder"
to in 1902. She became a close friend of Herman
Bang. The letters uncover new information about
their close relationship as well as about his hardships
during his stay in Berlin, were he moved from 1907
1910 after having been unrightfully critisized and
scorned for being a homosexual by the Danish author
and winner of the Nobel Prize, Johannes V. Jensen
(18481923).
Also Bang's international life and reputation are
uncovered in the letters sent from his many travels
abroad. Especially his last reading tour through most
of Europe and Russia and his final travel to America
were he died on 29 January 1912 are described
in detail. Most of the material here offered for sale
have never before been accessible to the public. The
material is the most comprehensive collection of
autograph material from Herman Bang to be offered
for sale ever.
Seven of the eight manuscripts for poems here presented
of poems "Digte" in 1889 the only collection of
poems he ever published. The poems of "Digte" (1889)
were not as well received by the literary critics as his
novels. As the letter to Kristian Dahl reveals this came
as quite a chock for Herman Bang, who felt he had
put all his literary integrety on the line when writing
The last and unpublished manuscript for the poem
"Hjemliv" is concerned with authorship and also
touches on a central theme in Bang's literary production,
the quiet life: "Kunde jeg finde de ømmeste Ord,/
Herman Bang was a front figure in promoting Henrik
Ibsen's (18281906) plays outside the Scandinavian
countries. In the 1890's he became the first to direct
Henrik Ibsen's plays abroad, thus introducing Ibsen's
art to the world. This manuscript fragment deals
with Herman Bang's relationship with Henrik Ibsen
and describes Bang's enormous respect for Ibsen as
playwright and as a man. The manuscript goes into
detail with Bang's work with Ibsen's plays at Lugné
Poe's Theatre L'Oevres in Paris in the 1890's. He also
describes how the introvert playwright reacted at the
premiere of the play "Bygmester Solness" and how
Ibsen came up to Bang afterwords and recognized his
work as a director: "Dette var mit Stykkes Genopstandelse."
Herman Bang's article on Ibsen was published in the
now almost forgotten magazine "Det ny Aarhundrede"
(which was only published in 6 volumes
between 1903 to 1909) at the time of Ibsen's death
from 19011908 to Herman Bang's publisher at Det
Schubotheske Forlag, Einar Aage Hirschsprung (1869
1909), the son of Heinrich Hirschsprung, who founded
the museum Hirschsprungs Samling in Copenhagen.
The letters document Herman Bang's work with several
of his most accomplished works in this periode,
"Ludvigsbakke", "Det graa Hus", "Mikaël", "De uden
Fædreland" as well as new editions of his earlier and
most acclaimed works such as "Stuk" and "Ved Vejen".
Several letters deal with how he wants his early
works distributed and sold.
80
4056
Also his thoughts about his own literary legacy are
unfolded he is especially concerned with the literary
impact of "Stuk". The process of writing fiction opposed
to articles is also dealt with: "Jeg kan ikke nu
Almost all of the letters reveal the pecuniary problems
of Herman Bang. In Hirschsprung he found a
discrete person who sent him money when he was
haunted by loan sharks and when everyone else
turned their back to his requests. The pecuniary
problems, however bad, also seemed to generate a lot
of new ideas for literary works he could write in order
to pay his debts to Hirschsprung and others (e.g.
he describes his work on the unknown work "Kunstnerkonen")
many of them were never published.
Provenance: Descendants of the Hirschsprung family.
Herman Bang - Unpublished manuscripts
Collection of autograph manuscripts with autograph
corrections by Herman Bang including 25
autograph manuscript leaves written by Herman
Bang in minute hand, all numbered. Various sizes.
[1886] + 13 autograph manuscripts for unpublished
poems by Herman Bang. Dated 1899-1901.
21 pages.
This important collection of unpublished autograph
manuscripts by Herman Bang includes 25 autograph
manuscript leaves. The manuscript describes characters
(e.g. Bernhard Hoff) and scenes that indicate that
the leaves are fragments of a very early and hitherto
unknown version of Herman Bang's principal work
"Stuk" (1887), which Bang wrote from October 1886
until September 1887.
During his writing of "Stuk" Bang had several difficulties
with his publisher Andreas Schou who did not
aprove of the early versions of the novel. Especially
the first couple of chapters were problematic and
were later harshly edited by Schou. Bang had written
the first two chapters of the novel, whose work title
at this point was "Bernhard Hoff", in December 1886.
But material from this early stage has hitherto been
considered lost (this process is described in detail by F.
Conrad in "Omkring Stuk", Hårsløf, p. 1634).
82
4057
However the manuscript leaves here presented describe
several scenes from the final edition of "Stuk"
in a similar, but recognizable form. Also the manuscript's
title character, Bernhard Hoff, who Bang later
renamed Herluf Berg Herman Bang's alter ego is
described. In December 1886 Bang wrote to his other
publisher Poul Schubothe Langhoff (who took over
the publishing of "Stuk" from Schou in the spring
of 1887): "Bernh. Hoff faar et andet Navn og Bogen
kaldes Stuk". The manuscript leaves were therefore
written as early as the fall of 1886 and make out the
hitherto earliest known version of Herman Bang's
novel "Stuk".
The manuscript leaves all have different sizes and
have all been cut out of larger leaves. When Bang
edited his own works of fiction, he would cut out
good parts from earlier versions in order to save himself
the trouble of writing everything twice (Hårsløf,
p. 16), thus the manuscript also documents Bang's
creative process.
Herman Bang: Haabløse Slægter. Cph 1880. 1st
edition. Some foxing. Bound in fine full decorated
Haabløse Slægter was Herman Bang's first novel
which made scandalous headlines when it came out
due to a description of the relationship between a
young man and a much older woman, which was
considered obscene. Bang was ordered to pay a fine
and the remaining copies of the first printing which
was only printed in few copies were confiscated.
Thus later editions of Bang's debut were edited and
entire passages were cut out.
Just Mathias Thiele (17951874) was one of the
central figures in the Danish Golden Age. As an art
historian, collector of folklore, publisher of "Danish
Folktale" (181823), a patron of arts and founder
of The Royal Collection of Prints and Drawings in
Copenhagen his career was outstanding. His work
was strongly supported by prince Christian VIII and
the letters in the collection bear witness to their
close correspondence and relationship. Thiele's letter
archive is an important source for illuminating
the artistic environment in the Danish Golden Age.
Besides letters from the essential artists and cultural
figures of the period, the material also contains letters
and documentation from Just Thiele (18231876)
the nephew of Just Mathias Thiele. He inherited the
printing house "H.H. Thieles Bogtrykkeri" after his
father in 1846 and he ran the business with great
success. A great deal of his bussiness came from the
Danish state and included the printing of stamps and
bank notes. "H.H. Thieles Bogtrykkeri" also printed
popular books such as "Folkekalender for Danmark"
(185276) (People's Calendar of Denmark) as well as
many first printings of H.C. Andersen's famous fairy
tales.
H.C. Andersen (18051875) became acquainted with
the Thiele family through Just Mathias Thiele who
was a very important person to the young and promising
writer. In Thiele's memoirs he describes his first
impression and meeting with the younger Andersen
like this: "Og hvad hed saa denne Dreng? Nu kan
man med Glæde og med Taarer i Øiet sige det uden
at fornærme eller i nogen Maade at nedsætte ham,
nu, da han er blevet en Yndlingsdigter, ikke blot i Danmark,
Fødeland havde faaet Øinene op for den i ham boende
Genius". Thiele: "Af mit livs Aarbøger" (1820).
The books here presented have passed to different
members of the Thiele family through the years. One
of the previous owners Ida Thiele, was a descendant
to the "first" Ida Thiele (183035) (the daugther of
Just Mathias Thiele) who was source of inspiration for
H.C. Andersens's fairytale "Den lille Idas Blomster"
The creator of "Fabler for Börn", which has been
called the first "real" Danish children's book, was the
engraver O.O. Bagge (17801836). Bagge planned
to publish 4 volumes but only 3 were published. The
work was to expensive to make and it could not compete
with the much cheaper children's books which
were imported from Germany.
Bagge's close friend Eckersberg (17831853), one of
the pioneers in the Golden Age of Danish painting has
drawn several of the illustrations (5, 9, 20, 24, 33, 40,
49 and 66 + rear wrappers.) "Fabler for Börn" is described
and illustrated in Vibeke Stybe: "Fra billedark
til børnbog", p. 4041.
Provenance: Bent W. Dahlstrøm, formerly of Oscar
David's collection.
THE GLOSSY
DREAM
120

Glossy picture scraps with intriguing
motives have fascinated collectors of all
ages since they first appeared around
1860. The following pages present one
of the largest and most well preserved
collections of early printed scraps from
the 19th century to be offered for sale
in Denmark in many years – the Jan
Hansen Scrap Collection.
The almost 2500 scraps in this unique collection
of Danish and European scraps have
been collected through a life time. Many of
the scraps were acquired from the sales of
prominent Danish scrap collections such as
Vibeke Stybe’s and Estrid Faurholt’s collections
(later in the Lego Toy Collection), both
of whom were authors of publications on
scraps and pictorial books of the 19th century.
The material comprises scraps from the
early illustrated broad sheets of the early part
of the 19th century to the glossy pictures
of the late 19th and early 20th century. The
vastness and variety of motives, sizes and
styles give an intriguing and rare insight
into the almost forgotten pictorial world of
the 19th century – from romantic sceneries,
exo tic landscapes, enchanting children and
angels to fairies, elfs and circus clowns.
Early printed scraps
From the beginning of the 19th century, it
was a custom in many European homes to
chromolithographic process allowed printers
to make colour printed pictures.
The first colour scraps
The prints made in the 1840s and 1850s
were still quite primitive compared to later
because the printing process was so elaborate:
when making prints in colour, every
colour needed its own stone plate, thus
colour pictures were also quite expensive to
print. But later the process became much
more efficient and a world of colours were
introduced to the printers and the public. The
printers immediately saw the opportunity of
selling colourful pictures to the many collectors:
at first, mainly adults, only in the latter
part of the century did it become a hobby for
children.
The glossy pictures
Around 1860 the first elaborate colour scraps
with glossy surfaces appeared. In these years
the scraps were small and rectangular and
made in sheets to cut out with scissors. The
122
motives were dreamy and sentimental depicting
children and romantic couples and held
in pastel colours, some were even decorated
with gilded frames and tinsel. Later the
printing technique became even more refined
and the scraps were embossed and surplus
paper was cut off around the edges which
gave the scraps a new dimension and range
of motives.
The golden age of scraps
From the 1860 and to the 1910s the production,
quality and fascination with the shiny
pictures peaked – they were widely used for
decorating albums, small decorative boxes,
jars, furniture, screens as well as cakes and
greeting cards. The world famous Danish fairy
tale writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-
1875) was also enchanted by the scraps. He
made both picture albums for children and
decorated large screens using various kinds
of scraps. But even though the tradition of
decorating with scraps was widespread and
they were printed in thousands and thousands
of sheets, the ephemeral nature of the
scraps has made these early originally printed
lithographic pictures of the 19th century
increasingly rare on the market.
The golden age of scraps
Important collection of more than 500 originally
printed scraps from the 1860s to the 1890s. The
collection includes a broad variety of scraps from
miniature to large scale figures, primarily the early
rectangular shaped scraps. The smallest scrap
measures 2 x 1,5 cm, the largest 20,7 x 16,5 cm.
Some mounted on cardboard. Among the themes
are several early motifs with gilded frame and
tinsel, English and Danish members of the royal
family, sentimental motifs, religious motifs, angels,
exotic landscapes and people, soldiers, children
playing, portraits of women, flowers, animals and
ships.
124
4096
Early scraps of the 1860s and 1870s were characterized
by being rectangular, printed in sheets to cut out
by the collectors themselves. The shiny surface comes
from a glossy membrane or film that was glued on
after the printing often the membrane has fallen off
leaving the edges of these early scraps slighly curled.
Not until the 1870s did the printers begin to make
scraps with glossy, embossed surfaces. Faurholt, p.
611.
Provenance: Several scraps derive from the Karen
Schou Scrap Collection, later in the Jan Hansen Scrap
Collection.
Father Christmas and his helpers
One of the earliest orignally printed scraps of
Father Christmas, printed approximately 1860s.
4,4 x 3 cm. 1860s. Mounted on cardboard. Enclosed
large collection of more than 180 originally
printed scraps from the 1870s to the early 20th
century. The collection includes a broad variety of
scraps from miniature motifs to large figures and
3 uncut scrap sheets. The smallest scrap measures
3,8 x 2,0 cm, the largest 32,5 x 14,5 cm. Some
mounted on cardboard. The motifs mostly depict
Father Christmas with presents or children, often
standing or riding by car, train or Zeppelin. Also
included are several scraps of Father Christmas'
helpers: angels, elfs and children, several in large
format.
4100 4100
Rare early Father Christmas
scrap of the 1860s.
One of the most popular mythic figures in Western
culture, Father Christmas, was also a popular scrap
figure during the golden age of scraps. The figure
was first portrayed on scraps in the 1860s, but scraps
depicting Father Christmas are extremely rare from
this early period. Not even the Danish scrap historian
and collector Estrid Faurholt owned one: "Julemanden
" (Faurholt, s. 17, 2021).
As this collection documents Father Christmas' image
changes quite a bit during the years from a bearded
man with a hat dressed in various colours to the
more jovial representation dressed in red and white
colours, that was introduced in the beginning of the
20th century even before CocaCola made this type
of representation the common stereotype with their
adds depicting a CocaCola drinking Santa Claus in
1931.
Provenance: The early scrap of Father Christmas
printed in the 1860s was earlier in the collection of
Vibeke Stybe, author of "Fra billedark til billedbog".
Later in the Jan Hansen Scrap Collection.
The smallest scrap measures 2,3 x 2 cm, the largest
early Raphaels angels, angels in winther clothing,
sentimental angel motifs and many more, several
with tinsel.
132
4101
This collection of scraps contains several early, original
printings of one of the most popular scrap motifs
of all times: the putti of Raphael. This Renaissance
motif became a popular Christmas scrap in the late
19th century and it still is. The figures were taken
from the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael's (1483
COMMISSION BIDS
KOMMISSIONSBUD
It is possible to leave commission bids if you can not
be pre sent at the auction yourself. This service is free
of charge.
When leaving a commission bid, you are instructing our
customer service to bid up to a specified amount on
your behalf.
The situation can occur that another buyer has already
bid the same as you were prepared to. Are you then
willing to bid further? If not the lot will be sold to
another buyer.
If you do not wish to exceed your bid then write “Max”,
for maxi mum, next to the amount. You can also allow
us to raise your bid by approx. 15% or approx. 25%.
The hammer price may be higher or lower than the
estima ted price, so it is possible to buy below the estimate.
Bruun Rasmussen will always buy at the lowest
price possible, as if you yourself had been present at
the auction.
All commission bids are strictly confidential.
Commission bids must be submitted no later than
24 hours prior to the start of the auction.
HOW TO MAKE A COMMISSION BID:
Complete the commission form with all pertinent information.
Indicate the lot number.
Indicate the amount you are prepared to bid.
Should this amount be the absolute maxi mum, please
write “Max” in the ap pro priate column.
You can also allow us to bid by up to approx. 15% or
approx. 25% more by indicating so.
Sign the commission form and make sure that Bruun
Ras mussen receives it 24 hours prior to the start of the
auction.
If the information should be insufficient, Bruun Rasmussen
can abstain from bidding. Bruun Rasmussen
can not be held responsible for error in bidding or failure
to execute bids.
After the auction Bruun Rasmussen’s 24-hour “hammerprice-information”
is available for sale results at
+45 8818 1113.
INTERNET:
Commision bids can be placed via the website www.
bruun-rasmussen.dk directly from the page with the
item you want to place a bid for.
As a special service for this auction, all bids placed
online will be activated so you can see the current start
price (or reserve price) for each lot prior to the auction
in Bredgade. Please note that the deadline for placing
bids online is 3 hours prior to the start of the auction.
Please contact technical support on +45 8818 1114 for
questions about the registration and submission of bids
on the website
TELEPHONE BIDDING:
Should you wish to bid at auction by telephone, please
inform Bruun Rasmussen of your name and telephone
number, as well as which catalogue numbers you are
interested in, no later than 3 hours prior to the start og
the auction. You will then be contacted shortly before
the relevant lot comes under the hammer, thereby
allowing you to participate without being in the auction
room yourself.
beløb i hammerslag.
Angiv katalognummer.
Angiv beløbet De ønsker at byde.
“Max” i kolonnen.
Ras mussen undlade at byde for Dem, ligesom Bruun
Seneste afgivelse
Kontakt teknisk support på 8818 1114 for spørgsmål om
CONDITIONS OF PURCHASE – KØBSKONDITIONER *
§ 1. BIDDING
The buyer shall be the highest bidder at the “hammer price”. Any
person bidding on behalf of a third party shall be liable in surety
for completion of the sale.
At the request of Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner (herein after
called Bruun Rasmussen), all bidders, whether they wish to make
bids in person at the place of auction or commission bids by letter
or fax or direct telephone bids, should be able to document
their ability to pay and be able to provide proof of identity at
any time. Bruun Rasmussen is entitled to refuse to accept a bid
if, when requested, adequate security or adequate payment on
account has not been rendered.
Bids should be made by the bidder in person at the place of auction
or by written commission. Telephone bidding is possible
within certain conditions made out by Bruun Rasmussen. Bruun
Rasmussen is not to be held responsible for any errors that may
occur using this service. The auctioneer shall have absolute discretion
as to the increment of the bids. The auctioneer will also
make decisions in all cases of doubt regarding the bidding
Credit/debit card information must be registered with Bruun
Rasmussen before bids can be submitted at our online auctions.
§ 2. PAYMENT
The purchase price is the hammer price plus 25% in buyer’s premium,
including VAT, for lots sold subject to the special VAT
scheme for sales of Works of Art, Collectors’ items and Antiques,
and secondhand goods by Public Auction (hereinafter called Special
VAT).
Certain lots are sold in accordance with specific rules on normal
VAT arrangement (hereinafter called normal VAT), so that the
purchase price is the hammer price plus an additional 20% in
buyer’s premium and VAT of 25% levied on both the hammer
price and the buyer’s premium. The lots subject to Full VAT are
indicated as such in the catalogue with an asterix (*).
Danish VAT registered buyers shall provide Bruun Rasmussen with
documentation of their SE-/CVR-number (VAT No.) as this has to
be quo ted on the invoice for goods bought at full VAT.
For some foreign buyers, specific VAT-exemption rules apply (cf.
Article 3). VAT-exemption does not apply to private buyers from
the EU who are considered as Danish buyers (cf. current Da nish
legislation on Special VAT Scheme for Sales of Works of Art,
Collec tors’ items and Antiques by Public Auction).
The purchase price falls due for payment when the goods have
been knocked down. Payment may be made in cash up to DKK
100,000, by Dankort, banker’s cheque, traveller’s cheque, Visa-,
Master-, Diners Club- or Euro card. Personal foreig n cheques may
only be used for payment by prior arrange ment.
Payment may be made during or immediately after the auction.
Under all circumstances payment must be made no later than
eight days from the date of the invoice. With online auctions,
payment takes place when the items are prepared for dispatch
(circa 12 hours after the purchase has been made) using the
banking details (credit/debit card and bank account) submitted
by the purchaser. At the same time an invoice and dispatch information
will be sent to the purchaser.
Should the purchase price not be paid by the due date, interest
at 1.5 % per new month will be charged.
If the purchase price and interest are not paid within eight
days after Bruun Rasmussen has sent its demand to the buyer,
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to rescind the sale and re sell
the goods at a Bruun Rasmussen auction or privately, and to
demand reimbursement of any related losses from the defaulting
buyer. Any further profit on the sale shall be payable to the person
who had deposited the goods for sale by auction.
If the defaulting buyer is entitled to proceeds from a sale of
goods by Bruun Rasmussen, Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled
to set off its receivables against its payables to the defaulting
buyer.
If the defaulting buyer has deposited other goods for sale,
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to sell such goods at a Bruun
Ras mussen auction without being bound by the reserve stipulated
by the defaulting buyer. The defautling buyer shall not be
entitled to demand the surrender of goods deposited for sale as
long as the debt payable to Bruun Rasmussen has not been dis-
150
charged, regardless of whether the value of such goods may be
deemed to exceed the debt payable.
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to refuse a bid made by a
buyer who is in default in respect to his payment obligations
B. Buyers with VAT-registration in Denmark may choose to purchase
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BOOK AUCTION 808

A storage fee will be charged for lots which have not been collected
within 14 days after the time of the lot being knocked
down. Goods which have been paid for but not collected within
1 year will be resold at auction or privately at the buyer's
expense.
§ 7. DISPATCH
Should Bruun Rasmussen undertake the packaging and forwarding
of purchased goods, this shall be done at the buyer’s
liable neither for any damage caused to purchased goods during
dispatch nor for any missing consignments.
§ 8. DROIT DE SUITE
Pursuant to current Danish legislation on Copyright, an artistic
royalty shall be collected on works of modern art by all Danish
and some foreign artists. Bruun Rasmussen will from the buyer
collect the royalties required on behalf of the artists’ organisation
Copy-Dan for any work of art subject to this law. These works
are identified in the catalogue by CD for Copy-Dan, marked
beside each relevant lot number.
The artistic royalty will be calculated as follows for each work of
art, when the hammerprice exceeds DKK 1,864:
• 5% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK 0 to
DKK 310,729 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
The artistic royalty cannot exceed DKK 93,219 for each work of art.
§ 9. EXPORT LICENCE
Applications for an export licence must be made to the Danish
Cultu ral Assets Committee when required in accordance with
current Danish legislation on the protection and preservation of
cultural assets in Denmark. Where such a licence has not been
obtained, the foreign buyer will be informed thereof immediately
after the lot has been knocked down to the buyer. Another
application will subse quently be sent to the Danish Cultural
Assets Committee by Bruun Ras mussen on behalf of the buyer,
now that the price is known. Should an export licence not be
granted, the Danish Cultural Assets Com mittee would be obliged
to acquire the purchased lot at the purchase price, and the buyer
would thus not be bound to the purchase.
§ 10. CATALOGUING
All lots are sold in the condition in which they are found when
knocked down and as described in the catalogue with subsequently
published changes and modifications. Cataloguing is
done according to the best of Bruun Rasmussen’s knowledge and
on the cataloguing principles stated.
The lots auctioned are often of some age or of a kind which
makes it possible that they may contain defects, deficiencies, or
may have been subject to restoration or damage not necessarily
stated in the catalogue. Catalogue pictures are for identification
only and cannot be used for an evaluation of the condition of
the goods.
Any person who wishes to bid at an auction should therefore satisfy
himself of the condition of the lots for which he intends
to bid by personal inspection at the preview held prior to the
auction. The catalogue description is an indication of the prevailing
oppinion of scholars and expert at the time of the printing
of the catalogue. If any doubts should arise after the purchase
regarding the genuineness of the purchased lot or its conformance
with the catalogue description, Bruun Rasmussen should
immedia te ly be informed thereof.
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BOOK AUCTION 808
Should the purchased lot be proved to be a forgery, or if the
ca talogue description contains material errors which lead to a
consi derably higher hammer price than that which a correct catalogue
description would presumably result in, the buyer shall be
entitled to cancel the purchase, after which the buyer shall be
reimbursed for the total purchase price paid plus buyer's premium
and VAT, when applicable.
For material errors in the catalogue description in respect to
measure ments or weight, compensation shall only be paid on a
percentage basis in proportion to the difference.
The right of cancellation of a purchase in pursuance of the
present conditions can only be exercised by the party who has
bought the lot in question at Bruun Rasmussen and shall be subject
to the presentation of a claim for cancellation in wri ting to
Bruun Rasmussen within 2 years of the purchase date and to the
purchased lot being returned to Bruun Rasmussen in the same
condition in any and all respects which the purchased lot was in
at the time of the lot being knocked down to the buyer.
In the event of cancellation the buyer shall not be entitled to
claim pay ment of interest on the purchase price nor shall the
buyer be entitled to claim compensation for any other ex pen ses
or loss incurred, including any possible loss of profit in connection
with reselling.
It shall not be possible to state cancellation of a purchase in pursuance
of the above provisions if:
a the catalogue description on the day the lot was knocked
down to the buyer was in accordance with the then generally
accepted opinion of scholars and experts;
b the only way of establishing whether the lot was a forgery
at the time of the publication of the catalogue was the
implementa tion of scientific processes, the validity of which
was only acknowledged after the time of publication of the
catalogue, or which would have required a disproportionate
amount of cost, or which would have been impossible to carry
out without damaging the lot in question.
In addition to the time-limits stated above, all purchases are
subject to the Statute of Limitations stipulated by Danish law by
which Bruun Rasmussen is under no circumstance liable for purchases
after 5 years from the date of purchase.
Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers
Jørgen Byriel, officially appointed external supervisor
COMMISSION
Bruun Rasmussen undertakes to execute commission bids for
bidders who are unable to be present at the auction. It is a
prerequisite that Bruun Rasmussen receives the commission
24 hours before the start of the auction for the bidders’ credit
to be checked, if necessary. Bruun Rasmussen is not to be held
responsible for any errors that may occur using this service.
CONDITION REPORTS
Bruun Rasmussen undertakes to provide further information
about the state and condition of the lots if possible. This is
regarded as a service for customers who are unable to make a
personal inspection of the lots at the preview. Bruun Rasmussen
stresses that the informa tion given cannot be used as the basis
for complaints; complaints can only be based on the catalogue
text.
EXEMPTION FROM VAT
Buyers shall, according to § 2, pay full VAT on lots marked with
an asterix *.
No Danish VAT is to be paid when VAT registered companies
from other EU countries buy at Bruun Rasmussen and resell
to private buyers, The private buyer then only has to pay VAT
according to the rules in force in the country where the foreign
company is VAT re gistered. For further information please consult
your local authorities.
