In the 1890s the Russian physiologist and physician
Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849­1936) was investigating
the gastric function of dogs by externalizing
a salivary gland so he could collect, measure, and
analyze the saliva and what response it had to food
under different conditions. He noticed that the dogs
tended to salivate before food was actually delivered
to their mouths, and set out to investigate this "psychic
secretion", as he called it. He was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1904 for his
research pertaining to the digestive system.
The letter is written to Valentin Fedoseevich (1845­
1912) who was a famous Russian veterinarian
and the founder of the social veterinary practice i
Moscow. In 1902 he worked as chief of the veterinary
administration of the ministry of internal affairs.
In the letter Pavlov presents a list of subjects that
he whishes to discuss with Fedoseevich concerning
veterinary legislation.
