Herman Bang was a front figure in promoting Henrik
Ibsen's (18281906) plays outside the Scandinavian
countries. In the 1890's he became the first to direct
Henrik Ibsen's plays abroad, thus introducing Ibsen's
art to the world. This manuscript fragment deals
with Herman Bang's relationship with Henrik Ibsen
and describes Bang's enormous respect for Ibsen as
playwright and as a man. The manuscript goes into
detail with Bang's work with Ibsen's plays at Lugné
Poe's Theatre L'Oevres in Paris in the 1890's. He also
describes how the introvert playwright reacted at the
premiere of the play "Bygmester Solness" and how
Ibsen came up to Bang afterwords and recognized his
work as a director: "Dette var mit Stykkes Genopstandelse."
Herman Bang's article on Ibsen was published in the
now almost forgotten magazine "Det ny Aarhundrede"
(which was only published in 6 volumes
between 1903 to 1909) at the time of Ibsen's death
in 1906.
