4099 4099 Fairy tales for children Collection of more than 340 orignally printed scraps from the 1860s to c. 1910. The collection includes a broad variety of scraps and 3 uncut scrap sheets. The smallest scrap measures 0,8 x 0,9 cm, the largest 9,7 x 13,1 cm. Several mounted on cardboard. Among the motifs are several early fairy tale series incl. Vilhelm Tell, Little Red Ridinghood and Robinson Crusoe with Danish text. Also included are several scraps with children. Mounted on cardboard. Enclosed large collection of more than 180 originally printed scraps from the 1870s to the early 20th century. The collection includes a broad variety of scraps from miniature motifs to large figures and 3 uncut scrap sheets. The smallest scrap measures 3,8 x 2,0 cm, the largest 32,5 x 14,5 cm. Some mounted on cardboard. The motifs mostly depict Father Christmas with presents or children, often standing or riding by car, train or Zeppelin. Also included are several scraps of Father Christmas' helpers: angels, elfs and children, several in large format. 130 4100 4100 Rare early Father Christmas scrap of the 1860s. One of the most popular mythic figures in Western culture, Father Christmas, was also a popular scrap figure during the golden age of scraps. The figure was first portrayed on scraps in the 1860s, but scraps depicting Father Christmas are extremely rare from this early period. Not even the Danish scrap historian and collector Estrid Faurholt owned one: "Julemanden har vi nær glemt, og han har dog troligt været med. I 1860'erne og 1870'erne har jeg ikke set nogen. Et af de rigtige, store, dejlige juletræer er nu en formue værd. " (Faurholt, s. 17, 2021). As this collection documents Father Christmas' image changes quite a bit during the years from a bearded man with a hat dressed in various colours to the more jovial representation dressed in red and white colours, that was introduced in the beginning of the 20th century even before CocaCola made this type of representation the common stereotype with their adds depicting a CocaCola drinking Santa Claus in 1931. Provenance: The early scrap of Father Christmas printed in the 1860s was earlier in the collection of Vibeke Stybe, author of "Fra billedark til billedbog".
