Herman Bang - Important collection of
letters
Important collection of more than 100 autograph
letters and lettercards sent to his publisher Einar
Aage Hirschsprung signed by Herman Bang.
Dated 14 January 1901 to 28 June 1908. Several
letters not dated. Sent from Denmark and Berlin.
Enclosed 6 autograph letters written by Herman
Bang's secretary signed by Herman Bang. Dated
27 November 1903 to 11 May 1904. + 1 autograph
letter by Herman bang's sister Nini Holst.
Not dated.
The letters in this important collection were written
from 19011908 to Herman Bang's publisher at Det
Schubotheske Forlag, Einar Aage Hirschsprung (1869
1909), the son of Heinrich Hirschsprung, who founded
the museum Hirschsprungs Samling in Copenhagen.
The letters document Herman Bang's work with several
of his most accomplished works in this periode,
"Ludvigsbakke", "Det graa Hus", "Mikaël", "De uden
Fædreland" as well as new editions of his earlier and
most acclaimed works such as "Stuk" and "Ved Vejen".
Several letters deal with how he wants his early
works distributed and sold.
Also his thoughts about his own literary legacy are
unfolded he is especially concerned with the literary
impact of "Stuk". The process of writing fiction opposed
to articles is also dealt with: "Jeg kan ikke nu
strax igen mishandle min Hjerne saadan som jeg nu
maa mishandle den, naar jeg skal skrive Romaner,
som skal forsvare min Stilling her i Landet og Verden."
Almost all of the letters reveal the pecuniary problems
of Herman Bang. In Hirschsprung he found a
discrete person who sent him money when he was
haunted by loan sharks and when everyone else
turned their back to his requests. The pecuniary
problems, however bad, also seemed to generate a lot
of new ideas for literary works he could write in order
to pay his debts to Hirschsprung and others (e.g.
he describes his work on the unknown work "Kunstnerkonen")
many of them were never published.
Provenance: Descendants of the Hirschsprung family.
