The Thiele Family - Autograph letters
Large collection of more than 500 letters coming
from the Danish author and collector of Danish
folk-tales, Just Mathias Thiele and his family in
particular Just Thiele (1823-1876) the nephew to
Just Mathias Thiele. The collection includes autograph
letters from king Christian VIII (Christian
Frederik), Ole Johan Freuchen, P.A. Tutein, Cecilia
Höyer, Daniel Frederik Eschricht, H. Smidth, Hans
Holm, Adam Christoffer Fabricius, Nicolaj Holten,
Johanne [Mangor] Holten and many others.
Enclosed 4 books, incl. J.M. Thiele: Vragstykker af
et Digterskib. Cph 1848. Inscribed by the author to
Nicolai Abraham Holten, 1848. Orig. cloth, worn.
Moreover enclosed album with 80 scraps. C. 1880.

Just Mathias Thiele (1795­1874) was one of the
central figures in the Danish Golden Age. As an art
historian, collector of folklore, publisher of "Danish
Folktale" (1818­23), a patron of arts and founder
of The Royal Collection of Prints and Drawings in
Copenhagen his career was outstanding. His work
was strongly supported by prince Christian VIII and
the letters in the collection bear witness to their
close correspondence and relationship. Thiele's letter
archive is an important source for illuminating
the artistic environment in the Danish Golden Age.
Besides letters from the essential artists and cultural
figures of the period, the material also contains letters
and documentation from Just Thiele (1823­1876)
the nephew of Just Mathias Thiele. He inherited the
printing house "H.H. Thieles Bogtrykkeri" after his
father in 1846 and he ran the business with great
success. A great deal of his bussiness came from the
Danish state and included the printing of stamps and
bank notes. "H.H. Thieles Bogtrykkeri" also printed
popular books such as "Folkekalender for Danmark"
(1852­76) (People's Calendar of Denmark) as well as
many first printings of H.C. Andersen's famous fairy
tales.
