Early international photographs
Large collection of more than 180 original photographs
and ferrotypes (portraits, family portraits,
groups of people). 1860s-1900s. Russia, France,
Denmark and USA. The photographs are in various
sizes, mostly mounted on a card. The smallest
measure 4 x 3 cm, the largest 28 x 24 cm. 20 photographs
are framed (in various sizes and frames),
44 small carte-de-visite photograps, collected in
album, 1880s (probably Danish).

When photography appeared in 1839, it became the
main method of recording history and especially the
nobility fell in love with photography, it became a
way to substantiate one self. The ferrotypes and a
great deal of the photographs in this collection come
from Russian and French noble families including the
Shuvalov family, the Skariatine family, the Guébhard
family and the Dennis family. Moreover the collection
contains more than 25 photograhps of the
American writer Charles Whiting who was married
into the French Noyes family. The collection represents
a number of prominent European and American
photographers including Denier ­ St. Petersbourg, A.
