Early international photographs<br />
Large collection of more than 180 original photographs<br />
and ferrotypes (portraits, family portraits,<br />
groups of people). 1860s-1900s. Russia, France,<br />
Denmark and USA. The photographs are in various<br />
sizes, mostly mounted on a card. The smallest<br />
measure 4 x 3 cm, the largest 28 x 24 cm. 20 photographs<br />
are framed (in various sizes and frames),<br />
44 small carte-de-visite photograps, collected in<br />
album, 1880s (probably Danish).<br />

When photography appeared in 1839, it became the<br />
main method of recording history and especially the<br />
nobility fell in love with photography, it became a<br />
way to substantiate one self. The ferrotypes and a<br />
great deal of the photographs in this collection come<br />
from Russian and French noble families including the<br />
Shuvalov family, the Skariatine family, the Guébhard<br />
family and the Dennis family. Moreover the collection<br />
contains more than 25 photograhps of the<br />
American writer Charles Whiting who was married<br />
into the French Noyes family. The collection represents<br />
a number of prominent European and American<br />
photographers including Denier St. Petersbourg, A.<br />
Foguet Paris, Notman Boston, Hastings Boston,<br />
G.W. Pach New York, J. Hansen Copenhagen, Gay's<br />
Gallery of Art Fall River, Emil Clusen Copenhagen,<br />
Eastman Kodak Company Rochester, N.Y., F. Glenton<br />
