Haabløse Slægter was Herman Bang's first novel which made scandalous headlines when it came out due to a description of the relationship between a young man and a much older woman, which was considered obscene. Bang was ordered to pay a fine and the remaining copies of the first printing which was only printed in few copies were confiscated.
