The vibrant engravings of this first edition were made<br />

by the Italian draughtsman and engraver Pietro Santi<br />

Bartoli (1635­1700), who worked with the author of<br />

this work G.P. Bellori (1613­1696) on several occasions.<br />

Bellori was a leading theorist of 17th century<br />

classicism. Bellori and Bartoli aimed in their works to<br />

preserve ancient culture by recording it in text and<br />

engravings.<br />
