Herman Bang - Autograph letter and
manuscripts
Collection of 8 autograph manuscripts for poems
by Herman Bang incl. 7 poems from his work
"Digte 1889" and one unpublished entitled
"Hjemliv". In all 14 pages. Enclosed one autograph
letter by Herman Bang to Kristian Dahl asking him
about the poems of "Digte", that he sent him. 1
1/2 pages. Dated 26 December 1889. + Kristian
Dahl's copy of Herman Bang: Digte. Cph 1889. 1st
edition. In orig. boards. Spine defect and boards
loose.
Seven of the eight manuscripts for poems here presented
were all published in Herman Bang's collection
of poems "Digte" in 1889 the only collection of
poems he ever published. The poems of "Digte" (1889)
were not as well received by the literary critics as his
novels. As the letter to Kristian Dahl reveals this came
as quite a chock for Herman Bang, who felt he had
put all his literary integrety on the line when writing
the poems: "De har vel dog nu faaet mine "Digte" som
sendtes herfra i Søndags?
Hele Bitterheden, hele Gruen i ens Skæbne møder En i
slige Øjeblikke."
The last and unpublished manuscript for the poem
"Hjemliv" is concerned with authorship and also
touches on a central theme in Bang's literary production,
the quiet life: "Kunde jeg finde de ømmeste Ord,/
ømme som din Røst/ og bøje dem i de blødeste Fald/
bløde som din Lød / da fik jeg vel det Billede malt./
Men Ord saa nænsomt ømme, saa ganske blide /
findes ikke./ Ingen Ord til at male/ stille vort Hjemlivs
stilfærdige Lykke."
Provenance: The descendants of editor Kristian Dahl
and his wife Olga Dahl (maiden name Hasselbalch).
