REASONS 27series of questions. “Why” is simply a smokescreen that many of <strong>the</strong>m use to disguise <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>yare on a seek-and-destroy mission, (whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y k<strong>no</strong>w it or <strong>no</strong>t) <strong>in</strong>dividuals who are disposed towards<strong>the</strong> “shoot first and ask questions later” approach that has come to typify <strong>the</strong> American m<strong>in</strong>dset. Thisseek-and-destroy mission is <strong>the</strong> attempt to silence a message that conflicts with someth<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>se<strong>in</strong>dividuals may prize and as such is oftentimes camouflaged with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context of an <strong>in</strong>terrogation ofsorts which I have experienced <strong>no</strong>w dozens (if <strong>no</strong>t hundreds) of times <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last 2 years and which is avariation of that “charity beg<strong>in</strong>s at home” <strong>the</strong>me that <strong>in</strong>troduced this discussion:“W<strong>her</strong>e is your concern for those at home? W<strong>her</strong>e is your consideration for your own blood, be<strong>in</strong>g that you are(whe<strong>the</strong>r you like it or <strong>no</strong>t) an American? W<strong>her</strong>e are your tears for those who lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives on September 11?W<strong>her</strong>e is your loyalty for those men and women <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service who have lost <strong>the</strong>ir lives <strong>in</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g for our “freedom”<strong>in</strong> Afghanistan and Iraq?”And of course, <strong>the</strong> predictable accusation-framed-as-a-question from those whose agenda lies <strong>in</strong> see<strong>in</strong>gto it that <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> state of Israel is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed above all o<strong>the</strong>r issues, “W<strong>her</strong>e are your tears for<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>no</strong>cent Jews who are be<strong>in</strong>g killed by suicide bombers? W<strong>her</strong>e are your tears for <strong>the</strong> victims of <strong>the</strong> Holocaust, whose survivors today are only do<strong>in</strong>g what any group of persecuted people would do were <strong>the</strong>y faced with similarcircumstances?”On a superficial level of course all of <strong>the</strong>se questions appear to have hit <strong>the</strong> bulls eye, and for those who(<strong>in</strong> what is <strong>the</strong> most generous of terms) employ a level of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that is shallow, it would appear that<strong>the</strong>y have made a good po<strong>in</strong>t. What we must remember though is that, <strong>in</strong>tellectually speak<strong>in</strong>g, this is <strong>the</strong>age of professional wrestl<strong>in</strong>g and o<strong>the</strong>r types of gladiatorial games that easily amuse an unth<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g mob.T<strong>her</strong>efore, we should <strong>no</strong>t let <strong>the</strong>se questions take on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual equivalent of mortal blows with<strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> context of this debate, for <strong>in</strong> truth <strong>the</strong>y are only fancy maneuvers with <strong>no</strong> real substance beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m.In <strong>the</strong> first case, let us be frank by say<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>se “questions” are <strong>no</strong>t questions at all, but are <strong>in</strong>steadcharges and accusations. By implication what is be<strong>in</strong>g stated <strong>her</strong>e is that I am nei<strong>the</strong>r a patriot <strong>no</strong>r a loverof freedom, that I k<strong>no</strong>w <strong>no</strong> loyalty to those around me, and worse still, that I am one of those detestable“mentally deranged bigots” who has nursed a certa<strong>in</strong> amount of unwarranted animosity for <strong>the</strong> Jews, asentiment which today is <strong>the</strong> only rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g unpardonable s<strong>in</strong>. The <strong>in</strong>dividuals who engage <strong>in</strong> this typeof <strong>in</strong>terrogation vary between <strong>the</strong> clever and <strong>the</strong> <strong>no</strong>t-so-clever; <strong>the</strong> clever be<strong>in</strong>g those who k<strong>no</strong>w that<strong>the</strong>re is <strong>no</strong>th<strong>in</strong>g to ga<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong>ir position <strong>in</strong> an honest, substantive discussion of <strong>the</strong> facts surround<strong>in</strong>gthis issue, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>no</strong>t-so-clever be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals who k<strong>no</strong>w that <strong>the</strong>y do <strong>no</strong>t have e<strong>no</strong>ugh <strong>in</strong>formatio<strong>no</strong>r gray matter necessary to manage such a debate <strong>without</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g like a fool.In ei<strong>the</strong>r case, what should be remembered is that this technique at debate and discourse is <strong>no</strong>th<strong>in</strong>g new,as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals who engage <strong>in</strong> this type of <strong>in</strong>terrogation (whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y realize it or <strong>no</strong>t) are merelymimick<strong>in</strong>g that which <strong>the</strong>y have seen take place everyday <strong>in</strong> America on <strong>her</strong> radio and television talkshows as of late. It is <strong>the</strong> process (even if done with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conf<strong>in</strong>es of what appears to be an air of civility)of shout<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> person and his message, and by so do<strong>in</strong>g, mak<strong>in</strong>g an example of him or <strong>her</strong> so as todiscourage o<strong>the</strong>rs from align<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves with that position. The difference between those who ask (<strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> more muffled tones) <strong>the</strong> previous questions and those who eventually lose all sense of composureand become like rabid dogs is only a matter of degrees. The po<strong>in</strong>t is that <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>no</strong>t <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong>terested<strong>in</strong> any k<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>in</strong>tellectual discourse, but ra<strong>the</strong>r are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> silenc<strong>in</strong>g a message which happens tocomplicate or thwart some idea or agenda that <strong>the</strong>y have constructed for <strong>the</strong>mselves for whatever reason. For <strong>the</strong> most part, <strong>the</strong>se people are <strong>no</strong>t, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strictest sense, ideologues. The truth is that <strong>the</strong>y simply do<strong>no</strong>t k<strong>no</strong>w what <strong>the</strong>y are about, at least <strong>no</strong>t <strong>in</strong> America. In <strong>the</strong> larger sense, <strong>the</strong>ir support for America’spresent <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East did <strong>no</strong>t come <strong>in</strong>to be<strong>in</strong>g as a result of careful consideration andresearch of <strong>the</strong> facts. They are <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have, after be<strong>in</strong>g given <strong>the</strong> option of choos<strong>in</strong>g chocolate orvanilla, chosen one as a result of <strong>the</strong>ir distaste for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, while be<strong>in</strong>g unaware that <strong>the</strong>re were o<strong>the</strong>r
28REASONSoptions open to <strong>the</strong>m as well. In <strong>the</strong> most unflatter<strong>in</strong>g sense, <strong>the</strong>y really are like <strong>the</strong> proverbial spectatorsat <strong>the</strong> coliseum who are be<strong>in</strong>g deliberately kept <strong>in</strong> a state of distraction and confusion for <strong>the</strong> benefit of arul<strong>in</strong>g elite who are busy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves with bigger projects of which <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs rema<strong>in</strong> unaware. Theyare <strong>the</strong> “common clay” who have friends or loved ones <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> American military who are fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>Middle East, or who see <strong>in</strong> this war an opportunity for America to rega<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prestige she lost dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>Vietnam era. Absent <strong>the</strong>se factors, <strong>the</strong>y may be <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have “religious” reasons for tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>side that <strong>the</strong>y have chosen, fundamentalist Christians who believe what has been told to <strong>the</strong>m by aJewish-owned media that <strong>the</strong> Muslims pose <strong>the</strong> most serious threat to <strong>the</strong>ir religion and way of life thathas ever existed. And of course, <strong>the</strong>re are those of <strong>the</strong> more maniacal variety present with<strong>in</strong> this group aswell, who have constructed this elaborate series of events that culm<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> return of Christ, and whohave demonstrated what is a will<strong>in</strong>gness on <strong>the</strong>ir part <strong>in</strong> facilitat<strong>in</strong>g whatever situation is necessary i<strong>no</strong>rder to hasten this Second Com<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>no</strong> matter how horrible such situations may be to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>no</strong>centpeoples liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> those affected areas.Despite <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>y may <strong>no</strong>t be ideologues, never<strong>the</strong>less, this ‘mob’ must be handled somewhatdelicately, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dividuals still pose a formidable danger by virtue of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stability that haspermeated <strong>the</strong>ir thought processes. They have demonstrated aptly <strong>in</strong> recent years <strong>the</strong>ir will<strong>in</strong>gness and<strong>the</strong>ir ability to participate <strong>in</strong> just about anyth<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g violence <strong>in</strong> order to protect this agenda andsee it thrive. More important than this is <strong>the</strong> fact that this loss of all sensibility is <strong>no</strong>t an accident, but isra<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> result of <strong>the</strong>ir be<strong>in</strong>g manipulated by o<strong>the</strong>r “<strong>in</strong>terested” parties who (at least as of <strong>the</strong> momentof this writ<strong>in</strong>g) prefer to rema<strong>in</strong> unseen and unconsidered. Those mak<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> mob are <strong>no</strong>t necessarilyevil people, just foolish, but never<strong>the</strong>less with this <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d what must be remembered is that <strong>in</strong> anyhonest discussion of <strong>the</strong>se facts such <strong>in</strong>dividuals do <strong>no</strong>t deserve <strong>the</strong> benefit of <strong>the</strong> doubt when it comes tounderstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir position, and particularly <strong>no</strong>t when consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>no</strong>t <strong>in</strong> any realsense <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> truth.Of course, we said “for <strong>the</strong> most part” <strong>in</strong> describ<strong>in</strong>g those who make up <strong>the</strong> bulk of what is considered<strong>the</strong> cheer<strong>in</strong>g section of America’s <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East conflict. T<strong>her</strong>e is however a<strong>no</strong><strong>the</strong>rcomponent to this section as well, made up of a few <strong>in</strong>dividuals who are <strong>no</strong>t be<strong>in</strong>g led by <strong>the</strong> <strong>no</strong>seunwitt<strong>in</strong>gly and who understand this situation <strong>in</strong> its clarity, and <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals who must bewatched with <strong>the</strong> utmost concern, for it is <strong>the</strong>y who possess a danger that surpasses that of <strong>the</strong> mob. Thetruth of <strong>the</strong> matter is that <strong>the</strong>re would be <strong>no</strong> mob at <strong>the</strong> coliseum were it <strong>no</strong>t for <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dividuals, and itis <strong>in</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>m that we must rema<strong>in</strong>, as a ra<strong>the</strong>r perceptive man once said, “as wise as serpents”.Pearls before sw<strong>in</strong>eThe situation <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g what is and has been tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East is <strong>no</strong>t as complicated assome would like to make it out to be, and an <strong>in</strong>dividual does <strong>no</strong>t need an advanced degree <strong>in</strong> order tounderstand its mechanics. The truth is that it is a story which, were it told accurately, possesses a simplicity<strong>in</strong> its explanation that could be grasped by mere k<strong>in</strong>dergartners. However, those who enjoy what is anuncontested mo<strong>no</strong>poly over <strong>the</strong> various <strong>in</strong>formation mediums <strong>in</strong> this country have tried to pa<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong>situation <strong>in</strong> confus<strong>in</strong>g and contradictory images, at least when such a picture works <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir favor.Understand<strong>in</strong>g that due to <strong>the</strong> decades of m<strong>in</strong>d-numb<strong>in</strong>g programm<strong>in</strong>g that he or she has received, <strong>the</strong>average Westerner suffers <strong>no</strong>t only from what is a very short attention span but as well from a seriouslyreduced capacity for critical thought, what those who enjoy this mo<strong>no</strong>poly over <strong>the</strong> media have done isto make certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mes with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussion of <strong>the</strong> Middle East situation easy to understand, and o<strong>the</strong>rs
