NO BEAUTY IN THE BEAST 7those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> apocalyptically-m<strong>in</strong>ded world of <strong>the</strong> Christian West) that <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>no</strong> room for any additionalcommentary. It could be argued that <strong>the</strong> bank of debate is already burst<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> seems, and that myadditional two cents is <strong>no</strong>t only go<strong>in</strong>g to overload <strong>the</strong> discussion, but as well differs <strong>in</strong> <strong>no</strong> substantiveway from <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> co<strong>in</strong>s found with<strong>in</strong> it. It is easy to see why <strong>the</strong>re would be those who wouldargue this, particularly s<strong>in</strong>ce it is a topic that seems to never take a break and <strong>the</strong>refore has become areligion <strong>in</strong> and of itself for many people. However, it is precisely because of <strong>the</strong> fact that it is <strong>the</strong> nucleus around which many Christians are liv<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong>ir lives today that I have decided to add my voice to this contest. Understand<strong>in</strong>g that do<strong>in</strong>g so onlyadds to what has by <strong>no</strong>w become a cacophony of sorts, (<strong>the</strong> <strong>no</strong>ise that is produced by all of <strong>the</strong>se various<strong>in</strong>struments with<strong>in</strong> this discussion) never<strong>the</strong>less, I am of <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion that most of those who are play<strong>in</strong>gare on <strong>the</strong> wrong page and fur<strong>the</strong>rmore are <strong>no</strong>t <strong>the</strong> musicians that <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y are. For <strong>the</strong> most part,<strong>the</strong>y are simply mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>no</strong>ise <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same way that a child who is unlearned <strong>in</strong> any of <strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es ofplay<strong>in</strong>g a musical <strong>in</strong>strument can<strong>no</strong>t help but to replace <strong>the</strong> peace of silence with <strong>the</strong> anxiety of nervegrat<strong>in</strong>gdiscord. It is <strong>no</strong>t my <strong>in</strong>tention to add to this discord, even though we must remember thatdissonance is go<strong>in</strong>g to be an unavoidable by-product of my ‘jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> band’ as it were, and even if I didmanage to play <strong>the</strong> piece perfectly.I once heard an <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong> his attempt at scoff<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess of believ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> prophetic visions saythat were we to put 1,000 chimpanzees <strong>in</strong> a room, give each of <strong>the</strong>m a typewriter and have <strong>the</strong>m bang outa bunch of senselessness, that we could, after piec<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> various th<strong>in</strong>gs that were produced, come up with a work of art. His assertion of course was that of typical rationalists who see an <strong>in</strong>divisiblebarrier between <strong>the</strong> natural world of human events and <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e world that created it. And <strong>in</strong> allfairness to <strong>the</strong> rationalists, this tendency that <strong>the</strong>y ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se days is completely understandable, given <strong>the</strong> times <strong>in</strong> which we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves today. After all, a war aga<strong>in</strong>st 1.5 billion people, with all <strong>the</strong>suffer<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>justice that accompanies it has been launched and fueled <strong>in</strong> <strong>no</strong> small part by <strong>the</strong> efforts ofthose who have taken <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess of biblical prophecy to a new mania. In light of <strong>the</strong>se facts, it is easy<strong>the</strong>refore to see why <strong>the</strong>re would be those who would avoid try<strong>in</strong>g to associate <strong>the</strong>mselves with anystudy of biblical prophecy as if it were some k<strong>in</strong>d of vessel conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> plague.I, however, take a different approach to this. To me it makes <strong>no</strong> sense to throw out <strong>the</strong> baby with <strong>the</strong> bathwater, as <strong>the</strong> rationalists will often do <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir dismiss<strong>in</strong>g of prophetic words. I th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>the</strong>re are greatth<strong>in</strong>gs to be learned and ga<strong>in</strong>ed by consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs, and I do <strong>no</strong>t subscribe <strong>in</strong> any way to <strong>the</strong> ideathat <strong>the</strong>se events tak<strong>in</strong>g place and conform<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong>y have been to that which has been predicted centuriespast are but a fluke. And although I will only do <strong>the</strong> safe th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g to broad conclusions about<strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs and of avoid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>utiae that <strong>no</strong> one has <strong>the</strong> capability of discern<strong>in</strong>g and decod<strong>in</strong>g,never<strong>the</strong>less I have seen e<strong>no</strong>ugh efficacy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong>se prophetic warn<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong>m to make abeliever out of me.Hav<strong>in</strong>g said this, let me state <strong>the</strong>n that it is my op<strong>in</strong>ion that we are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘end times’ that, centuries ago, were predicted to be forthcom<strong>in</strong>g. I will ascribe nei<strong>the</strong>r a timetable <strong>no</strong>r hair-splitt<strong>in</strong>g particulars to <strong>the</strong>seth<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same manner that many <strong>in</strong> this bus<strong>in</strong>ess do, a tendency that is a danger <strong>in</strong> and of itself foranyone try<strong>in</strong>g to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> any credibility. Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong>re are generalities that can be safely adoptedwhen decod<strong>in</strong>g all of this, someth<strong>in</strong>g that for obvious reasons is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> best <strong>in</strong>terests of all parties concerned.I do <strong>no</strong>t subscribe to <strong>the</strong> way of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that many rationalists have adopted, namely that prophecy is on<strong>the</strong> same level as palm read<strong>in</strong>g and Tarot cards. Like all th<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>re are charlatans and <strong>the</strong>re are bonafides, and to consign all of it to <strong>the</strong> realm of foolishness just because of <strong>the</strong> charlatans makes <strong>no</strong> sense, despite <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong>y possess such a formidable position <strong>in</strong> religious discussions today. For those
8NO BEAUTY IN THE BEASTwho look at <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs with an open m<strong>in</strong>d however, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>no</strong> way to avoid <strong>no</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>re havebeen people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past who have made predictions that have been validated and v<strong>in</strong>dicated withfrighten<strong>in</strong>g accuracy, <strong>no</strong>t <strong>the</strong> least of which have been those which foretold <strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> freedomfighter from Nazareth, Jesus Christ.T<strong>her</strong>efore, what we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves do<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> next few hours is discuss<strong>in</strong>g my understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong>events that took place 2,000 years ago <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> land k<strong>no</strong>wn as Palest<strong>in</strong>e, and <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>the</strong> social, politicaland religious struggle that took place between a peasant carpenter named Christ and <strong>the</strong> gangsters runn<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> state of Israel who opposed him. We f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> roots of this contention that, as ofthis date I have <strong>no</strong>t yet heard be<strong>in</strong>g discussed, as well as what k<strong>in</strong>d of relevance this contention has had<strong>no</strong>t only on <strong>the</strong> last 2,000 years, but also more importantly on today. We f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves discuss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>warn<strong>in</strong>gs given <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophetic vision that was experienced by a man named John on <strong>the</strong> island ofPatmos, <strong>the</strong> vision of <strong>the</strong> Beast who would appear at <strong>the</strong> end of time for <strong>the</strong> purpose of destroy<strong>in</strong>g all thatChrist <strong>the</strong> freedom fighter had envisioned. In short, this is my attempt at br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to practical, visible terms and images <strong>the</strong> cryptic and oftenmisunderstood and even moreso misapplied picture which humanity is fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>no</strong>w concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> eventfor which <strong>the</strong> world has been wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>no</strong>w for 20 centuries. And whe<strong>the</strong>r this <strong>beast</strong> is personified as <strong>the</strong>“man of s<strong>in</strong>,” as he is called by <strong>the</strong> Christians, “Dajjal, ” as he is imag<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> Muslims, or as <strong>the</strong>“Messiah” by <strong>the</strong> Jews, <strong>the</strong> image of <strong>the</strong> <strong>beast</strong> is <strong>the</strong> same. And although all three of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> faithsemanat<strong>in</strong>g forth from <strong>the</strong> Holy Land see <strong>the</strong> same picture, for two of <strong>the</strong>m he represents an image of evilw<strong>her</strong>eas for one of <strong>the</strong>m he represents <strong>the</strong> long-awaited savior.I have already experienced a certa<strong>in</strong> amount of reticence on <strong>the</strong> part of fellow Christians concern<strong>in</strong>gth<strong>in</strong>gs I have written or said on this topic, <strong>in</strong>dividuals who are obviously made very uncomfortable by<strong>the</strong> manner <strong>in</strong> which I have depicted <strong>the</strong> two ma<strong>in</strong> persons with<strong>in</strong> this issue, Christ and Antichrist. Thisis understandable, s<strong>in</strong>ce man is by nature an animal very much susceptible to <strong>the</strong> laws that govern <strong>in</strong>ertia,and whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> issue concerns mass and matter or whe<strong>the</strong>r it concerns philosophy makes little difference;a body at rest tends to stay at rest. And although I will say that this tendency is understandable, I will <strong>no</strong>tgo so far as to say that it is excusable. What I have seen on <strong>the</strong> part of people such as <strong>the</strong>se are uncritical,knee-jerk reactions to ideas that are <strong>no</strong>t that revolutionary concern<strong>in</strong>g this man, Jesus of Nazareth, whowas <strong>without</strong> question a revolutionary himself. What reactionary <strong>in</strong>dividuals such as <strong>the</strong>se have done, unfortunately, is to lump my argument <strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r arguments that are offered today by thosewho have a vested <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> defam<strong>in</strong>g Christ and his legacy. Aga<strong>in</strong>, I will say that this reactionism isunderstandable, s<strong>in</strong>ce a good portion of those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian world have developed this ‘siege mentality’when it comes to what have become <strong>the</strong> ever-<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g attacks on <strong>the</strong>ir faith and <strong>the</strong>refore are justifiablysuspicious about anyth<strong>in</strong>g new be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>troduced.Be<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g end of <strong>the</strong> criticism though offers me a different vantage po<strong>in</strong>t, and as such Ican<strong>no</strong>t help but consign all of this reactionary bus<strong>in</strong>ess to <strong>the</strong> category of unjustifiable guilt by associationand which possesses absolutely <strong>no</strong> validity. This is even moreso <strong>the</strong> case s<strong>in</strong>ce (and especially so <strong>in</strong> lightof today’s events) I hold this man and his deeds to be <strong>in</strong>surmountable <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir excellence and perfection. Were it <strong>no</strong>t for <strong>the</strong> fact that I view <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ions of such uncritical <strong>in</strong>dividuals with pity, I could be ledtowards be<strong>in</strong>g seriously offended by <strong>the</strong>ir accusations, particularly s<strong>in</strong>ce one of <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs I am try<strong>in</strong>g toaccomplish with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> text of my argument is <strong>the</strong> elevation of this man before <strong>the</strong> eyes of <strong>the</strong> rest ofmank<strong>in</strong>d. I will take it one step fur<strong>the</strong>r by say<strong>in</strong>g that it is because of this uncritical foolishness that hasbeen embraced by those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian West, a foolishness rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> refusal to see Christ <strong>in</strong> thisobvious light that we f<strong>in</strong>d ourselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mess that we have today.
