Sample EncountersCarnage demons are encountered ingroups, ranging from a pair of lackeysto mobs of thousands. Most groups,however, are made up of two to tenof these creatures. Other demonsmight use carnage demons as minions,but such demonic leaderswisely keep the carnage demons ata distance.Any demon that has the abilityto summon dretches caninstead choose to summonhalf that number of carnagedemons.Arrogant Assassin(EL 6): A powerful enemyof the PCs hasdispatched a vrock (MM48) to eliminate them.The vrock appears in theirmidst, but the fickle fienddeems the characters unworthyfoes. It insteadsummons three carnagedemons to dothe deed, then usesgreater teleport to findmore entertaining prey.Rampage (EL 9): Fourteencarnage demons made it to the MaterialPlane through an ancient portal that functionsonly when the stars are right. They’ve destroyed asmall outpost and a trading thorp, losing six of their numberin the process. The pack of eight’s current path leadsto an unsuspecting village. PCs have to track the fiends andpqqqqqqqqqrsCARNAGE DEMON LORECharacters who have ranks in Knowledge (the planes) canlearn more about carnage demons. Instead, carnagedemons are filled with the singularpurpose of pure destruction.Some consider carnage demonsto be a forced evolution of the patheticdretches, the product of a demonlord’s attempt to create a more usefullesser demon. This theory gainssome credence from the fact that,unlike most demons, carnagedemons are not tanar’ri. Their vulnerabilityto silvered weaponssuggests they might havebeen created using materialsfrom or relatedto devils.Environment: Carnagedemons, like mostdemons, are extraplanar creaturesthat are native to the Infinite Layers of theAbyss. Mobs of carnage demons can be found anywhere onthat plane. They are always eager to spread destruction andslaughter, so they use any portal or gate they encounter,having no concern for where it might lead. As such, carnagedemons can also be found near any place that harborsa gateway to the Abyss.Typical Physical Characteristics: A carnage demon hasa powerful humanoid build that borders on apelike, withlong arms hanging nearly to the ground. Those arms end inforearms the size of tree trunks, as well as stubby hands withthick fingers and claws. The fiend’s fanged mouth takes upmost of its face, and its head seems slightly smaller than isproportional for its body.Carnage demons have skin that ranges from a bloodycrimson to a darker red-brown.
