wounds don’t deal damage multiple times—a creature iseither affected by dragon toxin or not. Any form of magicalhealing eliminates dragon toxin currently affectinga creature but doesn’t protect against subsequent exposure. Its dragon toxin harmlessly dissipates 1 round aftera xorvintaal dragon dies.Energy Aura: The potent energy within a xorvintaal dragonpours out of its body, damaging everyone nearby. At thestart of each of the dragon’s turns, this energy deals 5 pointsof damage (of the same type as its breath weapon) per agecategory to all creatures adjacent to the dragon. The aurais obvious to all who can see the dragon. A red dragon, forexample, is wreathed in flame; a blue dragon has a corona ofelectricity; and green and black dragons vent corrosive gas.If the dragon uses its breath weapon, it loses its energy untilthe end of its next turn. Dragons that have no breath weaponcannot acquire this power.Intimidating Presence: This ability replaces the base dragon’sfrightful presence. When another NPC comes within adistance of 30 feet × the dragon’s age category away froma xorvintaal dragon, that dragon can make an Intimidatecheck opposed by the NPC’s level check (1d20 + Hit Dice +Wis modifier + modifiers on saves against fear). If the dragonbeats the NPC’s level check result, then that NPC’s attitudeimproves to friendly as long as it’s within range and for1d6×10 minutes after it’s out of range. After this time, theNPC’s attitude shifts to unfriendly (or, if already unfriendly,to hostile).Recall Exarch: A xorvintaal dragon can recall an exarch. This ability functions like the word of recall spell, exceptthat the dragon, not the exarch, instigates it. The exarchreceives forewarning—enough time to grab any adjacentobjects or touch any willing adjacent creatures. Using thisability normally takes a standard action, but the dragoncan take 10 points of damage per age category to use it asa swift action. When building an encounter with a xorvintaal dragonthat has this ability, award experience points separatelyfor each exarch called, and calculate the overall encounterlevel by including the called creatures as well. After all, they’re a significant part of the challenge, and once they’recalled, they’re with the xorvintaal dragon for the rest ofthe encounter.Rejuvenation: When a xorvintaal dragon reaches –10 hitpoints, it doesn’t actually die. All life functions cease, however, and the dragon is functionally a corpse for the purposeof resolving all spells that affect dead bodies. It takes a Healcheck (DC 20 + dragon’s age category) to detect any vitalsigns. It remains at –10 hit points no matter what damageor healing it receives. Death effects still affect the dragonnormally, and dismembering or skinning the corpse is sufficientto kill it.When 10 minutes have passed since the dragon last tookdamage, it gains fast healing 10. It still appears dead until itreaches its full normal hit points.Twist of Fate: Taking this ability gives a xorvintaal dragonan array of benefits, each activated as an immediate actionin response to a specific trigger.• When subject to a targeted spell, a xorvintaal dragon cantake an immediate action to try to disrupt the incomingspell. The effort grants the dragon a bonus on the savingthrow equal to its age category. Once the dragon uses thesaving throw bonus, its insight bonus on saves disappearsfor 1d4 rounds.• When subject to an area spell or effect, a xorvintaal dragoncan take an immediate action to move up to 30 feet, but onlyif doing so would take it out of the effect’s area. The dragonmust take the most direct available route to the nearest safesquares, and it provokes attacks of opportunity as normalfor its movement. If the dragon makes this move, it can’tmove during its next turn.• When the dragon could make an attack of opportunity,it can instead flap its wings and blast wind at the foe thatprovoked the attack. The wing flap functions like a bullrush attempt, except that the dragon doesn’t move alongwith the foe being pushed (though the victim can still bepushed as far as the maximum distance the dragon couldnormally bull rush it). If the other creature is airborne, thenit counts as one size smaller for the purpose of resolvingthe opposed check. If a xorvintaal dragon takes this immediate action, itcan’t use its wing attacks during its next turn. However, this immediate action doesn’t use up one of the dragon’sattacks of opportunity.SINGH THE IMMENSEThe human stepping out of the shadows is clearly obese, but he moveswith a catlike quickness despite his bulk.
