DEVIL32DEVILDevils are creatures of law and evil, native to the NineHells of Baator. They inflict misery on mortals and othercreatures through wicked schemes and convoluted ploysfor power.Baatezu are the predominant race (and subtype) amongdevils. Fiends that belong to the baatezu race are also part ofa rigid hierarchy in the Hells, where they strive for authorityand influence. Accomplishments can advance a devil’s station, but such deeds can also arouse the suspicion and ire of thosehigher in rank. Preemptive curbing of ambition throughviolence can come quicker than reward in the infernal realm.Baatezu possess a number of racial traits, summarized inthe glossary.GULTHIRLike a towering skeleton draped in folds of ruddy skin, this creaturehas a bald, warty head covered in lesions and tumors. An oozingwound serves as its mouth, and twin points of crimson light areits eyes.Gulthir CR 6Always LE Large outsider (baatezu, evil, extraplanar, lawful)Init +6; Senses darkvision 60 ft., see in darkness; Listen +11,Spot +11Languages Celestial, Draconic, Infernal; telepathy 100 ft.AC 21, touch 11, flat-footed 19(–1 size, +2 Dex, +10 natural)hp 51 (6 HD); DR 10/goodImmune fire, poisonResist acid 10, cold 10Fort +9, Ref +7, Will +9Speed 20 ft. It canthen attempt to start a grapple as a free action withoutprovoking attacks of opportunity.Swallow of Domination (Ex) A gulthir can swallow a grabbedopponent smaller than itself by making a successfulgrapple check.A gulthir’s gizzard can hold one creature at a time. Afoe swallowed by a gulthir is immediately affected as if bya dominate monster spell (CL 17th, no save). A gulthir cantake a full-round action to spew a swallowed opponentinto an adjacent unoccupied square. The disgorged foe is covered in slime, and as longas that opponent is controlled by the gulthir, its eyes arecoated with an even thicker layer of white slime. Oncedisgorged, a dominated foe can attempt a DC 17 Willsave at the end of each of its turns to end the effect. Theeffect also ends if the gulthir is killed or if the victim’seyes are washed with holy water (a full-round actionthat provokes attacks of opportunity). The save DC isCharisma-based.Ingest Evil (Su) If a gulthir swallows an evil outsider,it can take a full-round action to digest that fiend. If a swallowed foe fails a DC 17 Fortitude save, it isimmediately destroyed, adding its essence to the gulthir. The gulthir gains temporary hit points equal to thatoutsider’s full normal hit points and a bonus on savingthrows equal to half the swallowed fiend’s Hit Dice. Thesave DC is Constitution-based, and the save bonus andtemporary hit points last for 1 minute.Summon Baatezu (Sp) 75% chance to summon 1d4 lemures;1/day; caster level 6th. This ability is the equivalent of a3rd-level spell.Devils who fail their masters are, if not slain outright, transformed into wretched shadows of their former selves.Among the new forms a devil might take is the gulthir. These unclean devils continue to serve their displeasedmasters as methods of punishment for other lesser devils, because their gullets are certain doom for baatezu thatare swallowed. Such creatures are destroyed or becomegulthirs themselves.pqqqqqqqqqrsGULTHIR LORECharacters who have ranks in Knowledge (the planes) canlearn more about gulthirs. When a character makes a successfulskill check, the following lore is revealed, includingthe information from lower DCs.Knowledge (the Planes)DC Result16 This creature is a gulthir, a fi end from the NineHells of Baator. In battle, gulthirs bite and swallowtheir foes.21 A gulthir can mentally control those it swallows, spitting them out into a fight. This resultreveals the nature of the slime covering adominated creature’s eyes, and the ways toremove it. Gulthirs are vulnerable to goodalignedweapons.26 Gulthirs can summon lemures to aid them. If agulthir swallows another devil, including a lemure,it can add that devil’s power to its own. It caninstead slowly digest a devil, transforming it intoanother gulthir.pqqqqqqqqqrs
Strategies and TacticsA gulthir has lost so much that it has little fear, so it chargesinto battle recklessly, chooses an enemy, and tries to swallowthat opponent as soon as possible. It zaps strong foes withray of enfeeblement, hoping to weaken those opponents forwhen it comes time to grapple and swallow them. It usesscare to scatter its enemies so it can focus on its chosen target. If faced with numerous adversaries, a gulthir summonslemures to act as distractions and to consume to enhanceits own abilities.Sample EncounterGulthirs are pariahs, and when not in the service ofa greater devil, they stalk through the Hells gatheringpacks of lemures as pets and food. The lemures mindlessly mill aboutthe gulthir, unaware of the dangerthey face.Gublestald’s Gang (EL 7): A gluttonousgulthir named Gublestaldand his gang of four lemures (MM57) haunt the fetid landscape of acorrupted swamp. These fiendsserve a lich that lives in asinking tower in the swamp’sinterior, but they are free toharry anyone they find in thelich’s domain.EcologyGulthirs are outside the normalorder of fiends that populatethe Nine Hells. Formedfrom those devils that haveraised the ire of their infernalmasters, they are transformed into a lowerform until they somehow regain the confidenceof the baatezu.Instead of instantly ingesting the essenceof a swallowed fiend, a gulthir can insteadslowly digest the swallowed opponent,a process that transforms the creatureinto another gulthir. Devils that havedispleased their masters are oftenfed to gulthirs, as punishmentas well as a way to maintain thegulthir population. Displayinga small amount of pride, gulthirs never willingly transformlesser fiends into gulthirsthis way.A newly created gulthir is shattered by its transformation, experiencing waves of pain as its body acclimates toits new form. From the moment it reawakens, it knows itsGulthirfunction and all its abilities, and it sets out to regain its master’sfavor.Environment: Gulthirs are native to the Nine Hells ofBaator. They infest all the layers but are common on Dis, thesecond layer, where Dispater, the Iron Duke, dispenses hisparanoid brand of justice.Typical Physical Characteristics: A gulthir stands 10feet tall and weighs about 800 pounds. Its sallow skin hangsloosely from its skeletal frame. The loose mouthon a gulthir’s square head lies over a hinged jawthat the devil can unlock to accommodate creaturesof up to Medium size.Alignment: Like all baatezu, gulthirs arealways lawful evil. They take every opportunityto lord what little power they have over others, swallowing those that don’t bow down.SocietyGulthirs lament their fate. They despise theiraltered forms, a punishment they undoubtedlyfeel was unjust. To vent their hatred andloathing, they turn on other devils, revelingin the horror that their abilities elicit.Ironically, gulthirs are among the mostloyal servants in the Hells, acting likea policing force as well as a method ofpunishment. Other devils keep theirdistance from gulthirs, letting themenjoy the diversion of wreaking havocon lesser fiends.Typical TreasureTreasure is a symbol of statusthat gulthirs cling to. Theyadorn themselves with jewels, and they covet items of power. They swallow valuables carriedby their victims to keep such itemsout of the hands of potential rivals.Gulthirs have standard treasure for theirChallenge Rating.Advanced GulthirsUnless a gulthir somehow regains the favorof the devil that caused its demotion,it is condemned to spendeternity in its present form.Exceptionally old gulthirs are farlarger than their counterparts, andthey can consume larger creatures. For Player CharactersAn evil spellcaster can summon a gulthir using summonmonster VI or a higher-level summon monster spell.
