PLANNING THE SITE4.TopographyPositioning of a new building in undulating and hillyareas needs careful consideration to allow a practicalhouse design which does not look out of place. Buildingsthat break or disrupt the skyline should be avoided.Instead the natural folds of the local topography shouldbe used to help absorb the new house. Naturallyoccurringshelves or the gentlest part of a slope shouldbe selected wherever possible in order to minimise earthmoving and to avoid excessive scarring of thelandscape.A new building should respond positively to a sloping siteSloping sites can also present the opportunity forcreating an innovative solution to house design withoutdetracting from the character of the hillside. Byresponding to the difference in levels in a creativemanner, a distinctive stepped construction can beachieved which can be far more appropriate than the useof artificially-created platforms. In such situations thenarrowest elevation of the building should face down thehill, avoiding the need for excessive cut and fill.Avoid over-excavation or creating an artificial plateauContemporary building forms can adapt tosloping sites in innovative waysCareful shaping of the land around the building, with apreference for cut rather than fill, can also help it blendmore successfully with the surroundings while creatingfurther shelter. Excess fill should be either removed orcarefully graded to suit the natural slope of the hillside.Let the natural slope of the land dictate the building formIn flatter and low-lying areas the position of the buildingon its site needs to take full account of views fromsurrounding areas and the means for creating privacyand enclosure.
