1.INTRODUCTIONPurpose of the Design Advice1.This Design Advice is intended to be a workingdocument that provides a common source of informationand guidance for all those involved with buildingindividual (‘one-off’) houses in the countryside. It doesnot set out a detailed account of all relevant buildingtypes and is not intended as a source of ready-madedesign solutions. Instead, the Design Advice describes arange of general approaches and principles concerningthe planning and design of one-off houses in thecountryside that the Council regard as necessary toconsider in formulating specific design proposals.The main emphasis of the Design Advice is to reinforcethe distinctive local qualities of the County. It works onthe basis that new development in the countrysideshould share some of the characteristics that define thelocality in which it is located. It should be clear that thenew house has appropriate features in common withbuildings and landscapes of a similar kind in thesurrounding area.2.The Design Advice also recognises that it is necessary toreinvent the country house and develop a new ruralarchitecture for the 21st century, rather than simplyremodelling or recreating the methods and manners ofthe past.Applicants for planning permission shall submit a designstatement, which explains why a particular designsolution is considered the most suitable for a particularsite (see appendix 3) and show how they have givendue consideration to the objectives and principles set outin the Design Advice in the formulation of proposeddesign.3.Main Objectives of this Design Guide To stimulate debate about one-off house designs; To foster greater consistency in planning decisionmaking; To inform and inspire applicants, builders, designersand planners; and To help conserve and enhance the landscape andenvironment in County Limerick.4.The Design Advice should be read in conjunction withthe provisions of the current Limerick CountyDevelopment Plan.2.County Limerick: Rural Design Advice for Individual Houses in the Countryside
INTRODUCTION1.One-Off Rural Houses – Permissions Granted in County Limerick 2007-2011Recent TrendsIn recent years there has been an unprecedented trendtowards development of one-off housing throughout ruralIreland. Between 2007 and 2011 planning permissionwas granted for 51824 one off houses in the Country.In County Limerick approximately 1,900 one-off houseswere granted planning permission in the opencountryside between 2007 and 2011.The relatively high proportion of population living in thecountryside, combined with a dispersed settlementpattern, make buildings a pervasive element of theCounty’s landscape.economic and social structures.
