RECOMMENDED SEMESTER CALENDARFor Secondary Education <strong>Teaching</strong> Interns<strong>The</strong> cooperating teacher will consult regularly with the student teaching intern to makedecisions about teaching responsibilities as outlined on the calendar. Cooperating teachers willconsider such factors as the academic needs of students and the capabilities of the studentteaching intern. <strong>The</strong> following calendar offers some guidelines. Logs and ADEPT weeklyevaluations should be turned in weekly to the college supervisor.Stage 1 - ObservationWeek 1Stage 2 –Observing/AssistingWeek 2• Observe cooperating teachers’ classes and instruction.• Act as teacher assistant.• Learn students’ names and gather student in<strong>for</strong>mation.• Become familiar with physical building and bell schedule.• Assist the cooperating teacher with non-instructional routine.• Continue to assist cooperating teacher.• Work with students needing extra help.• Determine the order you will assume responsibility <strong>for</strong> teaching classes.• Complete and submit ADEPT Per<strong>for</strong>mance Standard (APS) 1: Long-RangePlan to college supervisor.Week 3 • Begin teaching one class, using a lesson plan prepared jointly or modeledin an earlier class taught by the cooperating teacher.• Continue with all other supporting/non-instructional activities.Week 4 • Add another class to your teaching responsibilities.• Work on unit plans (APS 2 and 3: Unit Work Sample). Seekresources/assistance from the cooperating teacher and other appropriatesources.• Begin writing lesson plans independently and submit to cooperatingteacher <strong>for</strong> approval.Week 5 • Add another class to your teaching responsibilities.• Assume most homeroom responsibilities, if applicable.Stage 3 –Independent<strong>Teaching</strong>Weeks 6, 7, 8, 9, 10Stage 4 – Phase-Out/ObservationWeek 11• Carry full instructional/class load responsibilities.• Cooperating teacher, student teaching intern, and college supervisorcomplete ADEPT Midterm Evaluation.• Mid-term conference with college supervisor.• Begin returning one or two classes to the cooperating teacher.• Assume the role of assistant to the cooperating teacher.Week 12 • At week’s end, return class instruction back to cooperating teacher.Week 13 • Observe at rural, urban or suburban schools <strong>for</strong> two days, completeobservation <strong>for</strong>m.• Return all materials to the cooperating teacher.• Complete all required <strong>for</strong>ms and portfolio, including APS 10 ProfessionalSelf-Assessment questions.• Final conference with cooperating teacher and college supervisor.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Citadel</strong>, School of Education 11
