KEY ELEMENTSThis standard requires the teacher to demonstrate the following abilities and dispositions:5.A <strong>The</strong> teacher uses appropriate instructional strategies.<strong>The</strong> teacher’s strategies are appropriate <strong>for</strong> the particular objectives and content andthe particular students’ grade, developmental, and ability levels. <strong>The</strong> strategies build onthe students’ interests and prior learning and are appropriate <strong>for</strong> the students’ stage oflearning (e.g., initial, application, practice, review) with regard to the particularmaterial. <strong>The</strong> teacher’s strategies promote higher levels of thinking and/or per<strong>for</strong>mance.5.B <strong>The</strong> teacher uses a variety of instructional strategies.<strong>The</strong> teacher draws from a substantial repertoire of instructional strategies, varying his orher strategies both within and among lessons according to the particular objectives andcontent and the students’ ability levels, learning styles, rates of learning, and specialneeds. <strong>The</strong> teacher conveys in<strong>for</strong>mation in a variety of <strong>for</strong>mats (e.g., lectures,videotapes, texts, DVDs) and approaches (e.g., demonstrations, guided practice, guideddiscovery, and simulations). As appropriate to the learners and the learning, theteacher’s instructional strategies include sharing instructional responsibilities with otherteachers, guest speakers, and/or parents; varying and/or exchanging roles (e.g.,instructor, facilitator, coach, and observer) with students; and creating opportunities <strong>for</strong>both independent and collaborative learning experiences.5.C <strong>The</strong> teacher uses instructional strategies effectively.<strong>The</strong> teacher uses instructional strategies that actively engage his or her students andthat ultimately result in meaningful learning <strong>for</strong> them. All students receive opportunitiesto experience success.APS 6Providing Content <strong>for</strong> LearnersAn effective teacher possesses a thorough knowledge and understanding of the disciplineso that he or she is able to provide the appropriate content <strong>for</strong> the learners.In this context, the term content refers to the particular aspects of the discipline that are beingtaught, including subject matter, concepts, principles, processes, and related skills. Central tothis standard isthe content competence of the teacher.
