Section 6: Expectations of the School Administrator<strong>The</strong> principal of the school serves as the educational leader and administrator <strong>for</strong> the schoolstaff. <strong>The</strong> principal is responsible <strong>for</strong> the education program and all other activities carried onwithin the school. As the leader, the principal has certain responsibilities to and involvementwith the student teaching internship experience.<strong>The</strong> principal or designated administrator is expected to:1. develop a positive attitude in his/her school that participation in teacher training is aprofessional responsibility;2. promote to the parents and community of the cooperating school a positive, public imageregarding the student teaching interns;3. identify and recommend teachers in the school who will be asked to serve as cooperatingteachers. This decision should be based on the satisfactory fulfillment of the schooldistrict's criteria <strong>for</strong> cooperating teachers and <strong>The</strong> <strong>Citadel</strong>'s Department of Educationaccreditation standards listed in these <strong>Guidelines</strong>;4. conduct an orientation <strong>for</strong> the student teaching intern and introduce him/her to membersof the faculty and staff;5. provide facilities and materials necessary <strong>for</strong> a successful student teaching experience;6. assist the student teaching intern wherever possible to become a successful futureteacher;7. communicate expectations <strong>for</strong> the cooperating teacher and provide adequate supportand supervision;8. conduct exit interviews with the student teaching intern(s); and9. provide <strong>for</strong> the removal of inadequate student teaching interns. In this matter, theprincipal maintains the right to request at any time, after consulting with the collegesupervisor, cooperating teacher, and director of internships & field experiences, theremoval of any student teaching intern <strong>for</strong> due cause (i.e., inappropriate actions,inadequate preparations, obvious personal deficiencies, or <strong>for</strong> any action detrimental tothe school system).<strong>The</strong> <strong>Citadel</strong>, School of Education 25
