APS 4Establishing and Maintaining High Expectations <strong>for</strong> LearnersAn effective teacher establishes, clearly communicates, and maintains appropriateexpectations <strong>for</strong> student learning, participation, and responsibility.In this context, the term participation refers to student ef<strong>for</strong>t.KEY ELEMENTSThis standard requires the teacher to demonstrate the following abilities and dispositions:4.A <strong>The</strong> teacher establishes, communicates, and maintains high expectations <strong>for</strong>student achievement.<strong>The</strong> teacher’s expectations are appropriately challenging <strong>for</strong> the grade and/or ability levelsof the particular students. <strong>The</strong> teacher communicates the learning objectives so thatstudents clearly understand what they are expected to know and be able to do. <strong>The</strong>teacher reviews and/or clarifies the objectives as necessary.4.B <strong>The</strong> teacher establishes, communicates, and maintains high expectations <strong>for</strong>student participation.<strong>The</strong> teacher’s expectations are appropriate <strong>for</strong> the grade and/or ability levels of theparticular students and <strong>for</strong> the subject area. <strong>The</strong> teacher effectively communicates theseexpectations so that his or her students will readily apply them to instructional activitiesand events during the lessons and to assignments and tasks both in and out of theclassroom.4.C <strong>The</strong> teacher helps students assume responsibility <strong>for</strong> their own participationand learning.<strong>The</strong> teacher clearly communicates the importance and relevance of the academicstandards and learning objectives as well as the way the standards and objectives relateto the students’ previous and/or future learning. <strong>The</strong> teacher encourages the students tobecome the active agents of their own learning and to take the initiative to follow throughwith their work. <strong>The</strong> teacher provides appropriate opportunities <strong>for</strong> the students toengage in self-assessment and reflection on their learning and to develop a metacognitiveawareness of their own strengths and weaknesses. <strong>The</strong> teacher assists the students indeveloping strategies to compensate <strong>for</strong> their weaknesses when it is necessary.APS 5Using Instructional Strategies to Facilitate LearningAn effective teacher promotes student learning through the effective use ofappropriate instructional strategies.<strong>The</strong> term instructional strategies refer to the methods, techniques, technologies, activities, orassignments that the teacher uses to help his or her students achieve the learning objectives.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Citadel</strong>, School of Education 35
