APS 4Establishing and Maintaining High Expectations for LearnersAn effective teacher establishes, clearly communicates, and maintains appropriateexpectations for student learning, participation, and responsibility.In this context, the term participation refers to student effort.KEY ELEMENTSThis standard requires the teacher to demonstrate the following abilities and dispositions:4.A The teacher establishes, communicates, and maintains high expectations forstudent achievement.The teacher’s expectations are appropriately challenging for the grade and/or ability levelsof the particular students. The teacher communicates the learning objectives so thatstudents clearly understand what they are expected to know and be able to do. Theteacher reviews and/or clarifies the objectives as necessary.4.B The teacher establishes, communicates, and maintains high expectations forstudent participation.The teacher’s expectations are appropriate for the grade and/or ability levels of theparticular students and for the subject area. The teacher effectively communicates theseexpectations so that his or her students will readily apply them to instructional activitiesand events during the lessons and to assignments and tasks both in and out of theclassroom.4.C The teacher helps students assume responsibility for their own participationand learning.The teacher clearly communicates the importance and relevance of the academicstandards and learning objectives as well as the way the standards and objectives relateto the students’ previous and/or future learning. The teacher encourages the students tobecome the active agents of their own learning and to take the initiative to follow throughwith their work. The teacher provides appropriate opportunities for the students toengage in self-assessment and reflection on their learning and to develop a metacognitiveawareness of their own strengths and weaknesses.
