D. Confidentiality of <strong>Student</strong>/School In<strong>for</strong>mationConfidentiality of in<strong>for</strong>mation pertaining to students is critical. Official school mattersincluding in<strong>for</strong>mation about students and personnel must not be discussed outside of theprofessional setting.E. Corporal PunishmentUnder no circumstances may a teaching intern in any school, use corporal punishment,threaten to use corporal punishment, or be an official witness to corporal punishment.F. Use of Personal AutomobileTransportation to and from the cooperating school is the intern's responsibility. <strong>The</strong>intern should not under any circumstances transport students in his/her automobile. Thisincludes field trips that are officially sponsored by the school or school district.G. Legal Responsibility<strong>Student</strong> teaching interns are not given any defined legal status in the public schools inSouth Carolina. Regularly employed teachers do have a legal responsibility <strong>for</strong> their classroom.For example, if a teacher through negligence allows a child to be injured in the classroom, thatteacher may be brought to trial and may have damages assessed. It is generally assumed thatthe legal responsibility of the regular teacher cannot be passed to the intern; however, this isan un-adjudicated point. <strong>The</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e, as a precaution it is suggested that you contact a localrepresentative of a professional education association to inquire about student interns'insurance. It can provide you with liability insurance (See <strong>for</strong>m - appendix). While in allprobability you will never need this coverage, the almost negligible cost suggests the wisdom ofhaving liability insurance. This coverage would be available to assist in defense and damagesassessed due to legal action taken by the student or parent. <strong>The</strong>se funds would be availableonly if the student intern has not violated any school district policies or regulations in carryingout job responsibilities.H. Professional Conduct<strong>Student</strong> teaching interns are expected to conduct themselves as professional educatorsat all times. This professionalism relates to dress, demeanor, language, preparation,punctuality, and attendance. Fraternization with students in social situations and communicationof a personal nature by phone or email are not permitted. <strong>The</strong> use of controlled substances is aviolation of <strong>The</strong> <strong>Citadel</strong>’s policy and South Carolina law. Interns who engage in unprofessional,unethical, or illegal behavior will be removed immediately from the cooperating school anddismissed from the education program.Cadets teaching in the classroom are required to wear appropriate leave uni<strong>for</strong>m - P. E.interns wear leave uni<strong>for</strong>m to and from school. In their school, they must wear a collared (golftype) shirt, socks, tennis shoes, shorts and coaching pants approved by their school <strong>for</strong> theircooperating teacher.
