This strategy aims to address theseissues through the implementation of targeted programs and initiatives.<strong>Environmental</strong> issues facing the <strong>Campbelltown</strong> LGA as per the State of the Environment reporting and the eight key topics identified in theNSW Government ‘Learning for Sustainability, NSW <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Plan’:SoESectionKey topic under NSW<strong>Environmental</strong><strong>Education</strong> PlanLocal issueOutline of issueOur LandBiodiversityConservationBiodiversityThe <strong>Campbelltown</strong> area is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. However thisbiodiversity is threatened by a number of urban impacts, particularly given the largeinterface between bushland and urban areas within the LGA.These are species which have been officially recognised as being at risk of becomingextinct, should efforts not be made to ensure their ongoing conservation.ThreatenedSpeciesThere are a number of threatened species which are found in the <strong>Campbelltown</strong> LGA,this illustrates the quality of the natural bushland areas found here. However, this alsomeans that <strong>Council</strong> and the community have a responsibility to conserve these species,and increase the community’s awareness of these species and the threats that theyface.WeedsOne of the major threats to local bushland health and biodiversity is noxious andenvironmental weeds. Weeds significantly impact on native plant species, by competingfor habitat and resources in an environment. This also has a flow on effect to nativeanimals, which have reduced options for food and suitable habitat as a result of weedspecies.Version 2.03 18/3/10Page 36 of 48
