<strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Strategy</strong> 2009-20121.4 Rationale behind the <strong>Strategy</strong>The Fundamental reasoning behind the development of the <strong>Strategy</strong> is:- To develop and undertake our educational programs in a strategic andinformed manner;- To identify and address key environmental issues that educational programsshould address; and- To ensure the programs developed are structured and targeted to address theneeds and demographics of the community.1.5 Aims of the <strong>Strategy</strong>This <strong>Strategy</strong> has a number of aims. These reflect both the diverse nature of the localenvironment, and also the diverse nature of the pressures it faces. It also recognisesthat a holistic and multifaceted approach will be the most effective way to undertakeenvironmental education.The aims of the <strong>Strategy</strong> are: To increase community awareness and understanding of the environment, witha particular focus on the local environment, it’s significance, and the risks itfaces; To improve the practices of the community, to reduce the impact of their actionson the local environment; To assist and support the local community with improving their practices; To promote and encourage sustainable use of the environment, with aparticular emphasis on remnant bushland areas; To promote and encourage the local community to reduce consumption anduse natural resources more efficiently; To increase community awareness and action in regards to sustainabilitypractices; To utilise ‘learning for sustainability’ principles in planning and deliveringenvironmental education programs; To identify key environmental issues to be addressed through environmentaleducation means; To utilise existing community structures and organisations in theimplementation of <strong>Council</strong>’s environmental education programs; and To make it easier for the local community to access pertinent informationrelating to the environment and environmental issues.Version 2.03 18/3/10Page 5 of 48
