Environmental Education Strategy 2009 - 2012SoESectionKey topic under NSWEnvironmentalEducation PlanLocal issuePest AnimalsOutline of issueA major threat to local flora and fauna is pest animal species. Feral animals placepressure on native plant species, by increasing the level of animals consuming nativeplants. Feral animal species also prey on native animal species and compete with themfor food and suitable habitat.Land ManagementDomesticAnimalsRemoval ofwood andbushrock frombushlandreservesAwarenessandsustainableusage ofremnantbushlandareasDomestic animals, if not managed in an appropriate manner, can also place pressure onnative animals. This can occur through a domestic animal such as a cat preying onnative wildlife, or dogs preventing the natural migration of koalas.Although significant areas of bushland are still remaining in the Campbelltown LGA, it isimportant that we actively work to conserve what is remaining, to protect localthreatened species and biodiversity levels. One of the threats to the habitat for nativespecies is the removal of bushrock and wood from bushland reservesThe Campbelltown LGA is lucky to boast a number of bushland reserves throughout theLGA, particularly along the Georges River corridor. These areas play a critical role incontributing to the amenity and biodiversity of the area. However, these areas of remnant bushland are at significant risk from a number ofactivities, due largely to their close proximity to adjoining residential areas. These risksinclude litter, illegal dumping, and illegal usage such as trail bike riding, vandalism andarson.IllegaldumpingLand Clearing(clearance ofvegetationand habitat)Dumping of rubbish and disused household items is a significant threat to the health ofnative bushland and biodiversity levels. With significant areas of interface betweenbushland and urban areas in the Campbelltown LGA, it can also prove a difficult issue toaddress.Has impacts on the not only the ecology of an area but salinity levels also. It is importantto recognise these impacts when investigating future development within the LGAVersion 2.03 18/3/10Page 37 of 48
